"Home" - Okay fine, Serekunda

... 5 p.m. It felt great to be home... even Justin said that it felt like he was going home! The only real word that I can find to describe the trip is "adventure". We had so many set-backs along the way, but it was one of the best trips of my life and I wouldn't give it up for anything. Would I do it again? Probably not. BUT, I'm still really proud to be able to say that I traveled through the entire Gambia ...

Gambia Senegal tour by bike

... 08 Start: Basse Santa Su End: Jangjang-bureh (Georgetown) Km: 95 My decision to enter back into he Gambia was due to the good state of he roads. The south road is good from Basse to Georgetown and the north road is perfect from Georgetown to Barra. From Barra its a short ferry ride to Banjul and the Atlantic coast resorts and my plan to have a few days by the beach was turning into reality. While breakfasting I kept on ...

Introduction Reading for Day 4

... grew up under. "nothing is permanent," he says. And it is true, eventually all political systems change drastically, even our own. Jaiteh also seems to derive hope from education. Jammeh has supported the building and expansion of primary, secondary, and higher education during his time in power. Though his systems focus far too much on "Structures [as in buildings], and not the students they produce," this is an advancement. Jaiteh thinks Jammeh has allowed for these advancements ...

Introduction Reading for Day 2

... for boys, long skirts for girls. You probably won't have books to carry - most reading material is shared - which will make the hot walk to school a little nicer. Your parents will have chosen to send you to either a public or private school, but in general more schools have been built in the past few years, so hopefully your walk won't be more than 20 or 30 minutes. You must keep in mind, though, that the walk is always made longer by how many times you see friends and ...

the makings of a feminist

... the school building. A taxi driver with one customer already in the front seat (which is usually very normal) immediately stopped for me - a young white girl - and agreed to take me where I needed to go. Then, while I sat confused in the back, a argument in wolof developed in the front seat involving the words 'tubab,' and 'racist.' Apparently, as I would find out later, the driver refused to take the initial passenger to his destination in favor of mine. Even the ...

10 ridiculous things a day

... that I could easily find with many Gambians. I was spending too much time on the beautiful balcony of our mansion-like compound, not in the Gambia. On top of this, I decided that I had no problem giving away a good amount of money, because I simply could not deny the need for it here, and so I had to adapt to my surroundings. And then I got conned. Bad timing, to say the least, for any sort of revelation. I feel now that the situation doesn't necessarily say something bad about ...

Malaria and other Monsters

... a lizard and a stick stuck in my toilet. Finally in desperation, with both bladder and heart rate at breaking point, I was forced to close my eyes and praying loudly, thrust my hands in (protected only by a flimsy carrier bag) and seize the struggling soaking creature. Running wildly through my house I hurled it out of the door, whereupon it blinked a couple of times dazed, and was promptly pounced upon by the cat. I am seriously considering digging a pit latrine in my back yard.

SNAPSHOT> Where I Work

I am working at an organization called CPA - The Child Protection Alliance. CPA is an umbrella organization that advocates on child protection issues. It does this mainly through running sensitization workshops with various sectors of the community on a particular topic. The participants will be a specific group of key members of the community such as such as religious leaders, village chiefs, headteachers ...
