Thoughts Upon Leaving Yunnan

... guide is or who will pick us up.. but we believe someone will.. :)

Of the Yunnan towns, Lijiang perhaps left the biggest impression on us, with its breathtaking (recreated) traditional village architecture and village life. There is a great buzz to Lijiang and once you step away from the well beaten tourist drags, it is very easy to become enchanted. The mountain ranges between Lijiang and Shangri-la, including Yulong Xueshan and Haba Shan, to mention just two we ...

Opened nearly two years ago with the help of the U.S.-based Nature Conservancy, the park is a stunning example of how this southwest corner of China is trying to raise the standard of living by showcasing its natural beauty. Shangri-La and Tiger Leaping Gorge

... could tell it had been built specifically for tourists and it seemed very fake, especially after a genuine tibetan town like Litang. Still, it was nice being in a place that has cafes and bars, even if they were all empty due to it being low season. We spent three days here and didn't do much, although on the second day we went out to a lake near the town where they charge you 40Y to walk around muddy fields ...

Shangri-la... the last frontier

... the road sides are colored spectacularly: blue, green, pink, red... Oh, and I haven't mentioned the snow capped peaks overlooking everything, everywhere you go. Simply stunning. Shangri-la, paradise, whatever you want to call it. Beauty less tamed than anywhere else we'd been so far, and just a glimpse into the Tibetan world. What a shame to have to miss it, and praying beyond prayers, to be able to experience it, if not now, somewhere down the road on our as-yet premature journey.

... door frame supplies store Abandoning hopes of reaching Yitang we spent 12hours on an eighteen seater minibus with 28 other passengers heading south to the town of Zhongdian in Yunnan province. Many years ago a fictional book was written in which a place called Shangril'la was considered paradise. The Chinese government claimed Shangril'la was in China and a political bidding war ensued over where this mythical place existed. They plumped on Zhongdian ...

It hurt a little bit, but at least it wasn't too long a climb and the views from the top were remarkable. From there, the path led down a gentle slope for the next few hours, taking in some beautiful scenery through forested and rocky paths, as far as the Halfway House where we gratefully rested for the night ...

I wasn't feeling that hungry so thought I would be adventurous and try the Naxi salami - see the photo I have attached. It wasn't exactly what I thought but it was interesting nonetheless! Kind of dry and had rice inside it. Some of the other meals ordered were yak stir fry (yak meat is really yummy - very tender) and stir fry with azaleas and chicken. The next morning we ...
