Unfortunately when I visited Innsbruck they had the worst snowfall for years; typical! Normally there are several ski resorts open just minutes from Innsbruck which cost approximately €17 euros for a ski pass. However, I had to travel to the Stubai Glacier which is approximately 1.5 hours drive from Innsbruck and costs around €10 by bus. The Stubai Glacier costs €45 for a ski pass for ...

Leaving Lucerne, but Still in the Alps!

... the way as well. We actually got on a first class train in the "Quiet" car. You are supposed to be quiet in that car. Only one other lady in the entire car with us. Nice ride. We had 15 minutes in Zurich, and after some momentary panic due to not finding Innsbruck on the list of trains, finally asked a nice lady at Information. She said it was leaving from track 8. Sure enough it was, but had several other cities listed and ...

Day 286 4 hrs, 4.4 kms I do stop in a fairly large city on the way. I do want to get a better feel for this unique Italian-Austrian region. It feels strange to get off a train and immediately find myself in a town--almost feels like I'm cheating or something! It also feels strange to walk block after block, and the city just continues and continues... I've gotten used to villages that take 10 to 15 minutes to cross. Finally ...

... what I suspected is true: a village had to be flooded when the dam was built, and this church tower is all that is left to the eye from this now underwater town. It seems both sad and poetic... The sun is setting as I reach my third village of Curon Venosta. Here I give into temptation, and opt for a warm bed again instead of camping out. It does seem to be a lot colder on this side of the mountain for some reason. And so ends a beautiful ...

... highlands of Nauders, my final town here in Austria. It's kind of a surreal feel, after hours of nearly impenetrable cliffs and fierce river gorges--thinking I'd left all land suitable for human life behind--to find a peaceful idyllic landscape high up on the mountains--a Shangri-La of sorts. I reach the town itself--a pleasant place built on gentle slopes with a couple of shops and restaurants open. Here I stop to chat with an older German couple that ...
