Across the Big Pond Part II - York!
The flight landed safely and without incident at Heathrow right on time. After a very quick security run, baggage claim and customs, Dave and AI were officially in London again. We took the tube/underground to King's Cross outside of London where we then had a lot of time to kill before our 11:30 departure for York. This was my first time in the …
Roaming (or Roman) York
After a very nice nights sleep, Dave and I awoke bright and early to a beautiful, sunlit sky. We were soon to find out it wouldn't last the day, however. We showered, dressed and headed downstairs for breakfast. I had eggs and toast and Dave had bacon, toast and sausage. Deciding to take advantage of the good weather, Dave and I set out on foot to …
When In York...
...stop at Betty's Tearoom, buy more about that later!
We were greeted by a partly sunny, but chilly morning again, After a filling breakfast here at the hotel we wandered down to The Shambles. Not many people about, so we got some unobstructed photos. That was because very little was open just yet.
What a fascinating set of …
Durham and York
... 11th century Norman Cathedral of Durham. Unlike Westminster Abbey, the Cathedral was very decoratively clean on the inside. The windows were smaller, the construction stone more light in colour and not nearly as covered by inscriptions and tombs. Huge columns, decorated by simple patterns lined the nave and beyond. From the centre of the cross, one could see a good way up the bell tower, and made it easy to imagine what Tintern Abbey might have been like. The back of the cathedral ...

... blind. I have to literally pause her film, wave my hands in front of her eyes and even resorted to poking her arm when she didn't respond to me talking to her. I seriously gotta pee and now she's asleep. Fortunately I am flexible and athletic enough to actually stand balanced on my seat (in turbulance)and clean jump over her into the next available empty seat and finally a dismount into the aisle. I was like a gymnast! I didn't wake anyone and ...

TravelPod Member ReviewsGaltres Lodge Hotel York
We chose this little gem due to its close proximity to York Minster and location within the historic part of the city. It's in an historic...meaning OLD building, so if you're looking for a spacious, high-tech modern hotel, don't stay here.
However, if you're looking for an inexpensive, historic place with some character that's close to city boutiques, restaurants and historic attractions, this is it.
We were in room #9 at the front of the hotel with a view of the streets. Noise was never an issue. Again, it's an old building with thin walls, and creaky and uneven floors. You're in historic York! Take it all in!
No, there is no convenient parking, or elevators (lifts), or decent water pressure in the very tiny shower stall, but we knew that coming in. Our only real disappointment in the hotel was not having Internet access. Other than that, Galtres served its purpose: shelter, food, and convenience.
The staff was very helpful and the food was very good. It was all about location for us with this spot.
