Day 25 - Bruck to St Johann

A travel blog entry by grmps on Oct 01, 2015

Just a wee jaunt planned for today. The master plan is to head for the " lake district" of Sound of Music fame. We looked at going to Salzburg and signing up for a 50th anniversary Sound of Music tour. For $50 each we were going to be driven in a bus to the lake district so it seemed obvious to just stick with Plan A. Before all of this we're going to have a lazy day to take advantage of another ...

... to "do" the Kitzsteinhorn at a mere 3000 metres. To get to base camp we tidied up our campsite accessories and took Wanda to the ski area, just a few kilometres away. We were relieved of €36 apiece for a three-stage ascent, and advised to press on straight to the top as it was already getting late. Everything stops at 4pm. Fortunately the lift system wasn't busy so no queues. Upwards initially in our own ...

We crossed the border from Slovenia into Austria with no formalities, just a wave through. The little alpine villages and steep mountains of Austria were just like postcards. The Grossglockner Road is one of the famous alpine roads. It's 48 kilometres of winding road climbing to 2571 metres above sea level before descending down the other ...

... to prove I was really looking upward ;-) Somewhat reluctantly we pack up after 3 days at, arguably, the best-equipped site so far. East to Kitzbuhel then south over the Thurm Pass in lovely weather. Fantastic views from the top as we descent into the Salzach valley, following a narrow-gauge railway towards Zell am See. We've seen several narrow-gauge railways - must be the latent spotter in me. Zell, unfortunately, doesn't seem to be motorhome-friendly, ...

        A short ride to Millstatt

After a late night out yesterday and a lazy start, I decided to take a short ride through quiet back roads to one of my favourite places, the floating bar at Millstatt called Kap 4613. I only came across a handful of cars on the journey, and none at all on the scenic but bumpy L11.

The weather was cool but sunny and it was just the right kind of day to take in the ...
