... translated means men's island and a very small island which people jokingly call the baby island. The snow was falling as we explored the little huts filled with wooden toys and christmas ornaments and they even built a smaller wooden replica of the thousand year old church that is located on the island. ... there....the top lookout landing had spray from the crisp clear mountain water settling on the rails and turning to ice....it was a welcome drink, after the long climb...as the ice melted in our mouths.....we caught a late bus back to Zell Am See...our friends took us to a restaurant which serves halal food and the whole dining area is decorated with Arabic Hashish pipes. Not The Top Of The World
... though it was a relatively warm day.....about 8 Celsius.....and very sunny....but up there the wind chill would ruin brass monkeys......looking out over the alps you could not see the top of the world but you felt close to it.........we came home to our beautiful appartment and looked down the Zell Am See valley and had hot chocolate......wonderful. Forest thaw
... was overcast, as predicted by the weather forecast. It certainly wasn't cold and the final few kilometers along the lake to the south of Achensee turned into a gentle stroll. Nordic Walking
... sleeve weather. The sudden snow had surprised everybody. The local lake steamer and steam train have all shut down. There is the usual assortment of museums and craft opportunities, but none that look likely to justify their entrance cost. A country cheese museum doesn' t sound inspirational in any case, cheap or smelly. Pertisau and Maurach have both got cable cars working and that could well be another walking opportunity lower down the lake.
