The town was divided into Upper and Lower Town. In the medieval period the higher classes lived in the Upper Town, and manufacturing was done in the Lower Town. There is a staircase that joins the two sections together, known as the Passage of the Stairs. We made our way up those stairs.

... probably need more time than that to even think about walking around the town, we extended our stay in Sibiu to 7 nights. By the 7th day, we were able to take a taxi to the main walking street in the old town, walk through the old town and then take a taxi back to the hotel. Robin has been feeling better and regaining more strength each day and hopefully we will be able to see more of the next town than just our room, the hospital, and the inside of an ambulance!

Next morning we woke up early to enjoy a good breakfast at the Pension Citadela and embarked on a journey through the Saxons heritage with the final stop at Sibiu, voted European Capital of Culture a few years back. We were struck by amazing rural landscapes along the way. Sadly we did not have a chance for take any hitchhikers this time.

... said we would just book online for the advertised price and they would get even less money. We were glad that we didn’t pay the higher price, they refused to give us the remote to the A/C as it was ‘broken’, our towels were hand towels and the bed had a bottom sheet and was covered by a curtain. A concrete slab would have had more give than this bed. Good for the spine I suppose, although a bit achey the next day. Better option than the housing estate ...

Romania's public transport network is not perfect by any means. The trains are rubbish and the buses are a bit erratic. Enter the Maxitaxi, or minibus to you and me. They do have some sort of timetable but generally leave when they are full and stop (to drop off or pick-up an additional passenger, welcome to perch on a provided plastic stool in the corridor between seats), when they feel like ...
