We arrived in Ciutadella just after 4 PM and will be anchoring here for the night. This town was once the capital of Menorca and was an important trading city in the middle ages. The influence of its trade center past are seen in the medieval old town with its many Italian-like style buildings lining the cities main square and its large cathedral.
At the mouth of the harbor is a tower/lighthouse and creates a scenic entrance ...
... just without the pounding surf.
The northern coast of the island is much more rugged and hilly than the rest of the island, with deep bays cutting in between the hills and the cliffs and sandy beaches lining the backs of the bays. We continued cruising along until we reached Ciutadella on the west coast.
Menorca has a much more rural feel then the other two large islands. The farms are lined with stone calls and if feels much less developed and less populated here too.
... back in the states will relate to is that mayonnaise was invented here, aka Mahonese which is named after this city.
Of course, Stee was up early and out the door to get his fix of ruins and history. He took othe only male guest with him. The island has over 1,600 prehistoric sites, with the largest one being on the edge of Mahon. The Trepucó site was made by the Talaiotic people that lived there between 2,000 and 1,000 BC. He was gone before breakfast so ...

We´ve spent the week excavating a trench! Even with an exclamation point it doesn´t sound too exciting. We dug down over a meter into rocky soil. After breaking up the soil, we had to ¨clean¨ it, which meant sifting through it for anything of importance. It seems like my main job was levering up and tossing out these stones that had been thrown in the trench when the camp was abandoned. We (ok, not me so much ...
Ciudadela, Balearic Islands, Spain and Canary Islands celliott76We had a very pleasant night sail with full moon and a beautiful smooth ocean. The wind came up a little the following day which meant a slight swell, but nothing uncomfortable. I found a nice little inlet with a very neat little holiday town tucked into the side of the inlet. We picked upa mooring buoy, had a beer and cooked dinner whilst watching a thunderstorm cracking over ...
Fornells, Balearic Islands, Spain and Canary Islands bellavitaThe last week has been mainly one of traveling. After stops in Paris and Barcelona, I arrived in Menorca yesterday. Menorca is an island out in the Mediterranean. Compared to it´s neighbors Maiorca and Ibiza, Menorca is relatively undeveloped. This has allowed the island to retain a lot of natural beauty. That said, there are still plenty of tourists and, apparently, it has become ...

Menorca, Spain, Spain garcia16... summer but that day people from our ship must have made up ½ of the people on the street. We walked around the town for a couple of hours, bought an English language newspaper (yeah!) and then took a nice wander around the harbor, looking at the boats.
