34. Colca Canyon

... stayed outside the door all night. We got licked by the Alpaca in the garden and set off on a long walk up and up and down and up. Due partially to some dodgy directions, we ended up walking all day, accompanied by the dog, through small relatively isolated villages most easily accessible either walking or by donkey. While one side of the canyon is sheer, the other is apparently great for growing fruit and veg, despite looking dry. Wherever possible crops ...

We begin our "slow and steady" climb to higher altitudes this morning. Our first official destination, Arequipa, is at 7,638 feet. The first test of our high altitude tolerance. Arequipa is the second largest city in Peru after Lima but as we near our destination from the air and I peer out ...
