... but then you also may have to deal with sudden flight cancellations (see first item above).
I think that is about it from the cockpit. I hope you enjoy your flight. We may still cancel - we have some time before we take off. I will let you know. Goodbye.
(P.S. We did finally arrive in El Calafate late last night. It is beautiful by day - it is exactly what you would think of Patagonia looking like - huge barren flatlands with a few houses spotting the horizon, lakes ...
... deal of people-watching on the boat (which unsurpisingly went hand in hand with a briliant round of people-mocking) with Kelly, our new Aussie mate, who we'll be travelling with for a few weeks. Definitely stories for when we are back...
The town of El Calafate is very cute and resembles places like Aviemore in Scotland. Very small, built for the cold and definitely geared up for tourists. All the shops have log-cabin facades and there are dogs ...
... and the fact that it is so easily accesable from el calafate. Theres not really much else to do in el calafate so we had planned to go to el chalten which is 4 hours away but the weather put paid to that idea, so we were left stranded in el calafate for 3 days waiting for our flight to Buenos aires. Bored out of our trees I even managed to read 2 books. The weather is bitterly cold, much like a bad winter at home so will be looking forward to reaching the warmer climate of BA.
El Calafate, Patagonia, Argentina joecatriona... at the glacier, which allowed us to view multiple calvings. As Aron Ralston said, "geology is happening now". Glaciers are moving sheets of ice, leading to m************s and fissures, that eventually becoming structurally unsound and give way. Given the active movement of Perito Moreno, we constantly heard deafening creaks coming from within the glacier and only saw bubbling water escape the front facade. We were also lucky ...
El Calafate, Argentina chiapoe... mythical Ruta 40, the longest road in Argentina linking Rio Gallegos (Patagonia) to the Bolivian border to the north of Jujuy in over 5500 km. It's nice to be back on this road which I know quite well in the province of Mendoza where I worked. We also gonna follow more or less this road on our way up to La Paz. As I already visited the Glacier Perito Moreno 5 years ago (one of the few Glaciers on earth still growing), I decided to go for a ...
El Calafate, Patagonia, Argentina flyingtitiWe drove about 2 hours south to the larger town of El Calafate. Camped at a great site in the middle of town, it even had WiFi. Stayed to nights and took a day trip out to the huge Perito Merino Glacier. The glacier is massive, 60km long, 5km wide, and almost 200 feet ...
El Calafate, Argentina brockandlisa... jackpot". We arrived back tired to be bundled of the bus only to forget our roll mats and leave them on the bus, we were going to have a firm bed tonight. We headed to the campsite tired so we didnīt notice the lack of insulation underneath us too much. Next day it was back to the bus station to retrieve our roll mats and book a ticket to the famous Perito Moreno Glacier. That afternoon we did the touristy trip after paying extortionate park fees that werenīt needed ...
El Calafate, Patagonia, Argentina feeandpete... have only (relatively) just met, and yet still feel the love from my loved ones simultaneously. I spent Christmas in el bolson with people named Carlos, Fabio, Zac, Hanna, Priscilla and Camille, only one of which i have known for more 4 months. We hiked for a few hours to a hidden waterfall and spent the day enjoying warmth and friendship... what did you all do? Not in a challenging way, but i just wanted you all to recognize that i ...
El Calafate, Patagonia, Argentina briancordova... the Perito Moreno glacier again but this time seeing it from the water level so it did offer a different perspective. I think that after those two trips, I have seen enough glaciers for this part of the world and will save any further glacier viewing for New Zealand. I did enjoy my time in Calafate, but would recommend only spending a couple of days at the most there as there really isn't that much to do. Unfortunately, I hadn't realised this ...
El Calafate, Argentina nixb... walk from the bus station, the last bit steeply uphill (which is always good when we're carrying all our heavy bags) and when we got to the cute little place we were really happy, it looked lovely.
However, two minutes later Katie was in tears again (this seems to happen when she doesn't sleep well; MENTAL NOTE: BUY A NICE BED WHEN WE GET HOME!) when the lady told us that there were no rooms with double beds available tonight, so we would have ...
