... made our way to I-44 which took us through/around St Louis. We then caught I-57 down to I-24 through Illinois to Kentucky.

That route was fairly direct and easy, but the road (I-57/24) through Illinois was horrible! It was so bumpy and broken up that I was sure something would break. We saw a 10 mile or so backup going the other way due to construction and made a mental note of it for when we leave. I was never so glad to be out of Illinois ...
