... the coast to coast drive across the USA we have had a couple of days to explore the area south of San Luis Obispo as far as Los Angeles using the city of Ventura as a base. We really struggled with where to stop for the final three nights. Initially we looked at LA itself but could not find anywhere suitable within our rather meagre budget that did not get poor reviews of either the motel or the surrounding area. Today was a day for SPEED! After departing Solvang we rolled through the Santa Ynez Valley passing numerous wineries (no tasting and riding!). Next we climbed about 2000 feet past Lake Cachuma then up and over San Marcos pass. We departed from HIghway 154 about 4 miles from the top of the pass. We then climbed to the top of the pass on the old country road that originally was the stage coach route over the mountains.

... able to do that. We all got chatting and then somehow got invited by them to go to Isla Vista, a university town just outside Santa Barbara where 90% of the towns population are students! It was here I managed to fulfill one of my lifelong dreams... drinking from a red plastic cup at a college party! The Americans all thought I was crazy making a big deal out of the red cup thing but come on, it's such a cliche! Before we headed out onto the streets to search for house parties ...
