I'm not a fan of Base in general. This is a fairly decent one though to be fair, and well located for places to eat, bars, the lake, supermarket and all of the shops.

This hostel was alright. The room was fine but the beds were really rickety and noisy every time you moved in them. The kitchen is big but has no appliances. It has hobs but no ovens. It does however have a really nice sun deck off from the kitchen with nice views of the lake.

The worst thing about this hostel is the noise. It is over the road from a really cheesy, crap nightclub playing horrible music. The windows let all the noise through, the hostel seriously needs to invest in some sound proofing! If you have any taste in music or any desire to sleep before 5am, think twice about staying here.

Masterton to Taupo via Hastings and Napier

We left Masterton around 8.30am and headed out towards Napier. There is a more direct route to Taupo, however, we had all day to do the trip and thought we might as well go via Napier.

The actual trip was not terribly far, however the winding roads increase the travel time. We got to a fork in the road and decided that we should probably …

Today was a driving day as we were retracing our steps from Wellington back to Lake Taupo and from there we planned to go off the Kiwi bus route over to Hawkes Bay (obviously known for the wine) where we would stay with Fiona's auntie and uncle. Whilst waiting to the Kiwi bus we bought a cup of tea at YMCA and learnt that the coffee 'flat white' …

After a particularly heavy night, a personal hero of mine, Josh Gibson arrives to wake me up 15 minutes before the Kiwi is due to leave. I pack my bag, clean my teeth and somehow manage to locate the bus and stagger onto it.

The day's entertainment comes in the form of a bus-wide joke telling competition. I attempt a few humerous quips, …

        Free falling

Lake Taupo is the skydiving capital of the world, with over 30,000 jumps a year. This was to be the place where Caroline would board a pink plane, rise to 15,000 feet, attach herself to a man and jump out of a plane, where she would then free fall for 60 seconds at 200km per hour or Terminal velocity, before the man would deploy their parachute ...

        Taupo 7th - 8th April 2009

7th April 2009 After a rather sleepless night we were back on the bus at 8am after a flying visit to Wellington and heading north to Taupo. We drove alone the Kapiti coast, which is littered with rugged yet beautiful beaches and small commuter towns. We stopped in Taihape for a toilet break before climbing up to the Central Plateau, home of the ...

We reached Taupo to find an Ironman contest taking place that day. Unfortunately for us, this meant our intended accommodation was booked up so we had to make other plans. Once we had sorted ourselves there was little left of the day so we walked along the town's lake and took in the beautiful scenery and blue sky. The main reason we were stayin...

        Lady of the Lake

There's two things you should know about Lake Taupo. First, the entire lake is basically a huge volcanic crater (the size of Greater London) created during a monstrous eruption some 27,000 years ago. When this baby blew up day turned to night as far away as China. This, along with a gale force wind and a swell to rival the Pacific, gave us food ...

On a Clear Day You Can See a Mountain

We awoke from our night in the car to the sounds of cars driving into the parking lot of the rowing club. When you choose a place to sleep in the car, it's probably best to consider finding a place that won't be used early in the morning. A rowing club is probably not the place since they tend to row at the crack of dawn! After a stop at McDonal...
