... back to the highway and take a dip on Races beach. Dunes, sand, sea = no camera on beach. Shimmied into our cossies and took the plunge. It was freezing - all agree colder than Kingsand- we caused quite a stir with people just stopping and looking and encouraging us. Really strong current to right (hence the name "Races") so quite challenging swimming. Like one of those pools you can get to swim against a current- we struggled to stay in the same place. ... white, even the jail is white. The business district is Vineyard Haven. Approval must be sought to start a business and there are restrictions of the type of signage that can be displayed (no rooftop and no neon). We also saw the beach where Steven Spielberg shot the movie Jaws. Two of the islanders had parts in the movie and a lot of others were used as extras in the beach scenes. ... shell on the top and winded herself and cut two fingers as well. Razor sharp shells all over- bring back Cornwall and weaver fish. Extent of team injuries outlined below in the photos.

Greater injury was the parking ticket we got for not displaying a 'Beach Permit' - smallest sign ever at approach to beach so now need to work out how to pay a fine when it wants a cheque. Ho hum. Only $30 but a hassle.

... Vineyard Sound. From his settlement there Gosnold visited Martha's Vineyard many times during the summer he spent in the 'New World'. The native Americans called the island 'Noepe' meaning 'Amid the Waters'- a reference to the two and often conflicting tidal currents at work around the island.
