the end of india

koshy's cafe is a lot more upmarket than i expected, although it doesnt appear to have changed much in the fifty year interval between my grandparents' visits and mine. very obviously catered towards the western population in bangalore around the end of the raj, which i am told was huge at the time, it still had bamboo blinds covering the windows, freshly ironed tablecloths, 1940's music playing softly in the background, and a spoon and fork with every meal (incredibly uncommon in south india...

Om... Om... Om... now we are the yoga masters!!

Ah we could not resist the lure of the beach! So once again we find ourselves in a bamboo hut by the seaside. It's different this time though as we are actually staying on the very top of a cliff-face, sleeping not more than 10m from the edge in fact. The beach is at the bottom of the cliff. There are waves here and Chris has been doing a bit of body-surfing, which maybe should be renamed "body-grazing" as it results in a lot of contact between skin and sand. Nice red welts on knees and elbo...

I talk with reception and he goes to call and discuss it with half a dozen people. Already wary of what is taking place, my attention is distracted by a large group of men stumbling out of the restaurant, completely drunk. They seem to be arguing and pushing ...

Reflections off the Arabian Sea

... in a taxi only and I get whisked off to the Beach Hotel due to the lack of selection. The hotel turns out to be quite beautiful, and I get a room on the second floor with a separate room facing the Arabian sea filled with windows. Hardly believing my luck, I quickly put my things away and run down to the beach to watch the sunset. The beach is full of Indians, and there is a loudspeaker booming with some man speaking who knows what. As I watch the sunset, I reflect ...

Very laid back in Varkala

... deciding if it is pool or beach today.

We are due to leave India tomorrow, 17th November and it has been a tremendous start to our learning adventure. At times it has been the most frustrating and terrible place on earth, but most of the time it is simply amazing, inspiring and a true positive experience in every sense. We are pleased we started in India as there has been so much to see and for the kids the massive gulf in cultures has provided a tremendous learning platform for them.

To love or not, is a question

... the day I signed on the ship. The romance, the affair, the human side of me should be hidden under a heavy blanket and away from sun rays. La passion, the fountain of joy and trouble all together. What a dilemma! Stop thinking romantically can be such a easy tool to alienate one from another. What a handy tool to be left out the drama, the commotion, the madding crowd. Locked up. Emptied ...

I love Varkala!

... in India and also most progressive for women with much opportunity for jobs and education. On the train, i could notice the difference with homes being bigger, stronger, prettier, as well as it being a lot cleaner (still rubbish but not as much) and the landscape was more tropical, typical Asia as i would call it with palm trees everywhere, very green and lush...beautiful.

Varkala

After 5 weeks travelling, we finally found ourselves at a beach, in the coastal village of Varkala. The town is situated pretty precariously on a cliff overlooking the Indian ocean and, after a couple of weeks of pretty constant moving, it was good to settle in one place for 4 days. Forgetting the power of the tropical sun, we raced down to the beach on our first morning and hired an umbrella to give us some shade. After a swim, we settled in to some ...

... socks last about 600 days of punishing abuse). There, I picked up my backpack at the cloak room, got an unreserved ticket, and boarded the train, avoiding the luggies, cow ****, and betel and pan juice spat on the ground. Once I arrived in Sasan Gir, I left the train in my socks and bought another pair of sandals at a local store (fifty rupees). Fitting is easy; it takes about one minute: "I'll take them." Armed now with my black Papilon sandals freshly ...
