... and I had to nurse it home. It had been giving me trouble for 10 days or so and I thought it was my fault for letting the fuel get too low and therefore the dirty stuff at the bottom had upset it. It turned out to be some computerised part that needed to be reset. On Friday we went to Ventimiglia markets. We tried going by car but after going up the mountain to the entrance to the A8 I realised I couldn’t trust it to go all that way so we drove to the ...

Grazie mille, but she doesn't want my thanks as she has just come out of hospital and needs some money. She still had the bandage on her arm! Feeling sorry for her ...

    ... local atmosphere.”

All is forgiven when we walk out on to the rooftop terrace of Casa Stacy. The views of Lake Como are indeed amazing. Just then, the bell of the church next door starts to chime. “No problem. It only chimes on the hour and the half hour.” As I write this, the party is warming up downstairs. Someone has found a huge bass drum. The bells are chiming but – we have a lovely ...
