Day 2: My Own Personal "Restoration Day"

... the way he told us first). My conclusion is that he really just wanted to check us out as we walked by...TWICE.

15 minutes later we FINALLY find the entrance to the trail. The "fun facts" at the entrance tell us among many other cool things that "The reserve has over 700 plant species, 36% of which are found nowhere else in the world but the Dominican Republic" ...awesomeness! Also important to note that there are no venomous snakes or spiders on ...

Day 1: Tourism is scary, Dominicans are awesome

The flight into Punta Cana lands at 5:20pm local time (same as EST) in a thatch-roofed airport where a group of 90% gringos/Europeans are bustled through a series of strange touristy obstacles. First I am very abruptly photographed between two beautiful Dominican women wearing tons of makeup, cerulean blue 'traditional' (?) costume-like dresses and chiquita-banana fruit hats. Mind you, they looked like they hated every minute of ...

a lazy week in Punta Cana

... shade if you need it...the beach was cleaned constantly, so it appeared pristine... they also would give you drinks in plastic cups if you ordered them on the beach (in bars further away from the beach they serve in normal glassware), and as much as my dear angel hated plastic cups, I think it was a good idea: after a few drinks people become more prone to dropping things, and shattered glass in the sand is not so good!... the hotel stuff was nice ...

Beautiful beaches...and Montezuma's Revenge

... tried to learn how to windsurf. We also went swimming with sea lions, a highlight for me. It was a great trip, although the last day and the few days after were unfortunately ruined by both of us getting pretty sick...Montezuma's Revenge claimed its latest victims!
Exploring

The gardens at Barcelo Bavarro Caribe are beautiful, lots of green and dashes of vibrant colour here and there. Pink hibiscus and red flame trees. Coconut and oil palms. Lovely. Don't mind the security guards who call out Hola! as you pass. (Can get creepy after dark). After lunch on Independence Day, we headed out to the beach first, to take in the scenery, snap some pics and borrow a kayak. After that, we went to catch the second half of the Germany-Italy semifinal on the big screen ...

SKIP IT - Especially in May

... the sun went away and the rain clouds came out. It started raining - and for the rest of the trip it only stopped sporadically.

We hadn't really budgeted for the overpriced excursions as we were fresh out of college and making no money at this point - we really just intended to veg by the pool and now that wasn't an option. Luckily, I had some books and I was able ...

SKIP IT - although, Day 1 went ok

... range - early 20s - so the staff kept hovering around us. Male employees mostly, which made us extremely uncomfortable. Constantly making inappropriate comments, always trying to talk to us, eying us up and down - really did not make for an enjoyable time.

The food also started to become monotonous and was not very good...and then the trip really started to go down hill.
SKIP IT - We almost didn't even get there!

... so I was ill prepared.

My roommate suggested that we try a club med - she had heard about them before and people seemed really happy going to them - she also liked the all-inclusive idea, which lets face it, I did too.

I flew out of Newark International and my roommate flew out of Charlotte...we were going to meet at another airport and then take the same flight to Dominican Republic. Her flight got delayed and the airline ...
