... hit whilst we were there.

Continued on towards Jurmala, which is only about 25kms west of Riga, but just as we were leaving Sabine, we spotted a couple of rare blue cows, so stopped and took photos. There are only about 100 blue cows left in Latvia. They are able to withstand the cold, wind and rain much better than the average cow, and as a result, a lot of cross breeding has been done.

... design)) or given names. It took me a while before I realized that Als Gors and Džordž Kluni were not famous Latvians, but rather Al Gore and George Clooney.

My own lovely first name, which my parents spent nine months coming up with, in a spelling (y, not ie!!) that I've spent 28 years defending, was promptly changed to Jani when I arrived in Latvia. Brrrr!

... I got back to Indiana. What I should have done was go to first class and begged, cried, offered to pay for an upgrade but back then, had no idea you could do such things. Nor would I have had any money with me to do it but a teen-aged girl crying might have done the trick.

... While the storm was beating the shore, we were inside beating each other with bushes of freshly collected leaves and flowers. Laying on a bed of ferns each of us got a treatment to drive out our sweat and evil thoughts - indeed at the end of the session we were completely relaxed and fully concentrated on the nice food that was prepared for us.

When we left Riga, the storm had gone and 3 lovely late summer days were ahead of us to reach Liepaja.

... the occupation to the point that Rīga's population is still now half Russian, half Latvian. Buildings in town are German influenced too, due to the German occupation (and their status as the elite at the time, before their forced deportation by the Soviets). Serious, compelling stuff - and I wish I had more time.

I feel bad in that this is all I got to see of Latvia. Next time, I'll have to see more of the ...
