... the Inn river. We cross over into Austria and continue along the bike path for a few miles. This has definitely got Bob thinking of another bike trip....as the bike path follows the river quite a long way. Passau is the beginning of many bike tours along the river to Vienna....about 300 km away. Back to Germany ...

... the glass maker we visited is called Theresienthal, which is reputed to be the finest maker of exquisite glass in Germany. The company experimented with going “main stream” in 2002 and had to file bankruptcy as a result. In the process a wealthy industrialist brought in Boston Consulting Group to assist with the turnaround, and today the company produces exclusively very high end and collectible glassware ...

The main, and really only reason for our visit to Pilsen (or Plzen) was … you guessed it …. for beer!!! Apart from the beer, Pilsen has a nice old town, and is the European Capital of Culture for 2015. It is also on the Lonely Planet’s top 10 places to visit in Europe for 2014, so it has to
have something going for it!!!

There is a nice main square (Republic Square) which has the obligatory big old church, ...

41 kms AM - Wow, what a morning! The exhibits in the Gäubodenmuseum in Straubing were extraordinary; the Roman objects found buried there in 1950 are amazing! Metal breastplates, knee guards, shin guards, helmets, swords, silver coins etc in perfect condition. The Romans settled here in 70 AD and called the place "Sor-viodurum". PM - The Danube trail is well signposted, we have only lost it several times, mostly entering or leaving ...

... on sauerkraut and Lana turkey medallions all washed down with beer! A lot of high school kids dressed up in Bavarian costumes and yelling & shouting, we suspect High School maybe finished! Our accommodation along the Danube has varied from private guesthouses to four star Hotels. All have been excellent, great hosts in the Gasthaus to informative staff at the Hotels. And they all speak English, to varying ...
