... played songs on an accordion all night while the locals sang along to the songs. We then went to Peter's Brauhaus which was filled with people dressed for the carnival. The beer there was amazing. After Peter's we went to the local kebab shop and had a yufkta and the guy actually baked the bread on the spot for us. ... translated all the announcements for us. We finally boarded at 4.30 for our 1 hour flight to Cologne. Made a heavy landing in light snow and waited for 45 minutes for some extremely wet bags to finally arrive. Taxi to the reception place to collect the keys ( where the taxi left us two blocks from where we were supposed to be so a short walk in the rain found us the reception). ... at the top we had to be careful of falling ice from the spier above and by the time we got down to street level the authorities had closed the climb so we were lucky we got up there when we did. ... cathedral was left relatively unscathed. Gothic at its most magnificent, it was once the tallest structure in Europe . When digging a bomb shelter they found the remnants of a very impressive roman villa, with a beautiful mosaic floor very well preserved. Also excavating a roman Jewish synagogue.
