getting lost on the Romantic Road

... remember to “turn” right not left. Also I was freaking out that the edge of the road (me the passenger) always looked so close. We stayed overnight at Rothenberg, a fully wall enclosed 16th century town, all the houses and inns are authentic and at night the lighting in many of the shop windows gives a real feel of the world of Dickens and Tiny Tim. Would love to see it in winter with snow on the ground. Our guest house used to be the mayors house.

Today we visited the tiny walled town of Berching...about 30 mins west of Parsburg. Berching is a historical town with a fully preserved town wall that was rebuilt in 1350...the first settlement was registered in 883, that it is more than 1100 years old! the wall is interspaced with towers and one of the towers has been converted into a 6-story apartment. the Rhine ...

Fussen and Neuschwanstein Castle

... shut down the town from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. not allowing any car traffic in or out of the town.

Today was my train trip from Rothenburg to Fussen and I had to switch trains five times. A lot of my train rides were only 20 minutes so you didn't get a chance to really settle in. The countryside here is gorgeous with rolling green hills and wildflowers all over and you keep going past these adorable German towns with the ...

Frohe Weihnachten!!!

... lots of hot chocolate and mulled wine (with a turbo shot) if you were Mars! We headed over to Fuessen in southern Germany on the 23rd of December with clear skies and lots of green fields but the weather God was finally smiling and on Christmas Eve (overnight) it SNOWED for the kids and we woke up to a white Christmas - just like we ordered!! Took the kids sledding before we went out for a wonderful lunch and just had a ...

Romantic Road - Part 3

... stay. We chilled some of the wine we had purchased at the winery by leaving it out on the balcony as it was colder than the fridge. It was great to have some space with two bedrooms and a sitting area and once again free internet. The girls were mildly amused by the television as everything was in German - even Blue Water High! The kitchen was very well equipped including a coffee machine. The next day we visited Neuschwanstein ...

Fussen is like a fairytale :)

... was this really snobby looking Asian woman who expression was so smug Michelle had actually commented on it before we realized this smirking woman was the English speaking tour guide. It was great. We all opted to walk back to town and got lost (as always) in the pretty woods that surround the tiny town of Fussen. Then we wandered around the town for a bit, got some yummy ice cream, and ate dinner at this Thai/Vietmanese restaurant. It was delicious. I got noodles ...

Schloss Neuchwanstein

... of elderly Germans striding energetically past us kept us going. At least we hadn't chosen to travel by horse and cart like some of our lazier fellow tourists. Our decision to walk was based on pride but also on our reluctance to pay ten euros each to travel by cart in each direction. Forty euros! Eighty dollars! Ridiculous. Tours of the castle departed every few minutes and were conducted in a variety of languages. Unfortunate ...

Is the romantic road romantic?

The breakfast selection was awesome this morning with a variety of choices besides the usual bacon and eggs. There was also smoked salmon, chocolate brownies and even pretzels! It certainly made up for no a/c. I have to say this was the best breakfast selection I ever had at a hotel! We stopped in medieval Nordlingen where there was a market area ...
