Blyde River Canyon

Website: http://www.southafrica-travel.net/accom modation3/zuleika_lodge.html

I have very little time to write before Jacob and Theresa meet me for breakfast. The lodge where we are staying has a computer, yay! I'm hoping to write more about what we did the last couple of days with the children. I'm not sure if I will be able to post pics but I will try.

We are scheduled to experience the thrill of Africa's longest zipline trail.

... and Cyprus. <br><br>This is our second night at a camp in a private nature reserve just outside of Kruger National Park. We'll go into Kruger for game drives tomorrow, including a night drive. Yesterday was a long day of driving to get here, but we made several stops at lookout points along a gorgeous scenic route across the mountains.<br><br>

Blyde River Canyon

We continued to move northeast to the Blyde River Canyon which is a significant natural feature of South Africa. It is 16 miles in length and is, on average, around 2500 feet deep. The Dam itself, when full, is at an altitude of 2182 feet. <br><br>The highest point of the canyon, Mariepskop, is 6378 feet above sea level the lowest point where the river leaves the canyon is slightly less than 1840 feet above sea level. This means that by some ...

Parting is such sweet sorrow

... there they were, heading toward the road and our approaching vehicle. It was brilliant. The birds were going nuts all around us, the wildebeest were snorting, the giraffe was on alert in the distance and one ballsy zebra faced down the cheetah. I couldn't believe what I was seeing. He was only 20ft from the cheetah. He is either crazy or knows that they are still pretty young (2-3 yrs) and that they don't have enough experience to kill him. Either way, I wouldn't ...

... when i'm not recording the general sightings so everyone in front of me takes the bulk of the webs. still though, when the span the road, i duck for cover no matter where i'm sitting. tracks are very important for finding the animals in the reserve. at 22,500 hectares, the animals can be anywhere and are quite hard to find right now given how thick the bush is! we drive along and see what's been on the road. we've seen lion and hyena prints but didn't find ...

The Kruger

... lion, buffalo, very unpredictable, giraffe, jackal eating an impala, Tawny Eagles and Bateler Eagles Leopard Tortoise, terrapin and much more. Got some very good photos. A good day. Yesterday they sprung a surprise on us! They blindfolded us took us out into the bush, bear in mind as I have said there are no fences and all wild animals roam totally free, dropped us off with a map and we had to navigate through the bush to a certain spot collect some kit there and then meet up ...

Goodbye South Africa...

... behaviour, listening to the roars, cackles and growls at night, witnessing the prey response, even so far as seeing the zebra kill, with the fat lions guarding it nearby. But we also share our camp with biting ants (poor Moi, she got bitten numerous times), elephants and leopards, not to mention hyena, porcupine, aardvark, mongoose, and probably snakes (although we didn't see any of them). We respect their space, they (more or less ...

Reserva Kapama

Safari South African style

... is when we point things out, they can laugh at themselves and realize they are racist, even though they don't mean to be, it's the way they were raised...they say they think maybe they are 40-60 racist, we say maybe more like 60-40, they laugh and agree. Couldn't find this place we had a reservation, so we ended up staying at this place with a fake waterfall and stone elephant entrance called Safari lodge....that night we met our tour guide for the next few days. His name is ...

Safari!!

... to everyone else on the bus and for them to actually see it too. You could just about make out its face in the distance with a pair of binoculars. It was awesome that we managed to see one as they are so hard to spot. After lunch we could see some hippos laying around in the water and the rest of the afternoon was uneventful but we did see some baboons. Then on the way to our next camp, we had our first encounter with an elephant. There were already a few other trucks there and the ...
