We set off to Amsterdam via the scenic route to break the monotony of the motorways. The countryside is very green and extremely flat. We passed through lots of pretty country towns, saw many cyclists, wind farms, windmills and animals. We travelled across the Afsluitdijk Dyke, a major causeway completed in 1933. It is 32 km long. We eventually made our way back to the ship and had a short rest before it was time ...

While my childhood imaginations of the Netherlands always consisted of wooden windmills, the city of Amsterdam hadn't really fulfilled that realization from my visits this summer. And I clearly see why, cuz the good stuff is hidden about 40 minutes away.So ...

... all other forms of transport - cars certainly give way to them whether they are single or in herds, (as they often are) and it seems pedestrian crossings mean nothing to anyone unless you are brave enough to stride boldly out and dare the cyclists to run you over. The only thing that cyclists occasionally give way to is other cyclists, and that only at the corner when two emerge simultaneously from different directions and one has to jink around the ...
