On the evening of December 2nd, five of us made our way into Johor Bahru. I met Sam K, Bob Linn and his wife Gail, teammate Albert Hahn, and Amit at Bob's hotel, the Mandarin Oriental, at 7pm, where Michael Tang had arranged a car to take us into Malaysia. Like most border crossings, it had its share of bumps. We had to fill out the forms in the car while it was moving. Bob and Albert had the additional burden of luggage on their laps. At the causeway crossing, the line for motorbikes was abs...

... squirrels were (but I could make an educated guess to be fair) but I was expecting cute, tiny creatures that jumped from tree to tree in an almost jovial and jocular fashion. It was slightly different to what I expected. We entered two antechambers (which had doors on either side that said "Door opens only when the other is closed") which was unsettling and then we entered the main enclosure. We walked in slowly behind a Chinese family who were chatting away, oblivious to the ...

Singapore, Singapore jokatieLeaving the colourful, sometimes chaotic Indian streets for clean, efficient, and orderly Singapore was a welcome change, but we did miss the energy and vibe of India.

We were planning to travel out of the country for a few weeks, maybe to Cambodia,Vietnam, Laos, or Australia, but then the H1N1 flu virus hit, and we were concerned that coming back to Singapore, we will be quarantined, and hence miss our flight back to Canada.

For me ...
Singapore, Singapore kalsi_kaur... we saw being fed. They were huge and quite cute, and very agile in the water. I had never seen a polar bear before. We also saw the tigers being fed, which caused them to prowl around like cats and growl. We had lunch at the restaurant, (very tasty food) but we were not allowed to sit outside because an escaped orangutan was sitting up a tree with its baby. We sat indoors and watched as their keepers tried to coax it down from the tree. Eventually the keeper ...
Singapore, Singapore angela_louise... sehen.
Singapore, Singapore kesitian... setting with the owner, Di, making sure that we wanted for nothing. After getting pretty much our entire clothing laundered on day one and scoping out the local beaches and shops, watching the sun set and treating ourselves to a good meal, we then used a hire car for 2 days to explore the island. Despite the sketchy insurance arrangements ("just don't crash it") we found driving the island a doddle. We completed a whole island circuit ...
Johor Bahru, Johor, Malaysia thewallers... Not sure how comfortable we'd be with doing Mr Shan's technique of firing a staple gun up someone's back passage to fix things though. At the end of the day there was an endoscopy case where me and Jules had to hold a woman down while she fought pretty fiercely against having a endoscope shoved down her throat by Mr Shan...that was definitely the first time I've had to do that before ...
Johor Bahru, Malaysia xfor_service... us. The car's occupants were a couple of kids who offered us a ride to Semporna for 60 Ringits. We were suspicious because the price seemed high and the kids looked to be about twelve! Luckily, just ahead of us on the road a man pulled over to talk on his cell phone so Chris ran over and asked him if he thought the kids were on the up and up. Apparently, he thought they weren't and offered us a ride for free. He seemed the better choice ...
