Belgrade Beanie!

... is really cool and got us to taste numerous different types of rajkia during our stay. Could do with a bit of a spring clean and air out, but a cool, friendly place.

Nonie, Ben and I went to "?" for lunch which is one of the oldest traditional Serbian taverns still around. Great setting and harsh, abrupt service slowly turned friendly over the course of our stay. I had the Karadordeva Snicla, which was veal rolled and stuffed with kaymek ...

... up. She of course ended up being the employee on duty. (We learned later that the employees sleep on the couch in the common room when they work the night shift.) Luckily it’s off-season so there were hardly any guests in the hostel, meaning we could check in as soon as we arrived. (Most of the time, we have to wait until the afternoon check-in time because they are waiting for other people to check out and then they have to clean the rooms.) The first thing we ...

A rainy afternoon in Sarajevo

Brandon and I took a two hour bus ride from Mostar to Sarajevo through the mountains. Sarajevo hosted the winter olympics in 1964 so I guess I shouldnt have been surprised how mountanous and beatiful this drive was. Nontheless I was. Upon getting to Sarajevo, the first thing we noticed was how much the weater had changed. It had gone from 80 and sunny in Mostar, to 50 and rainy in Sarajevo. Since we spent 2 days in Mostar we only had an ...

Zemun - River Town on Edge of Belgrade

I have until 4:00 before my train to Bucharest. I opt to spend the day in a nearby town, Zemun. It is a riverfront town that is basically a suburb of Belgrade.

While I get on the bus just fine, finding the right stop is difficult with limited signage and a Cyrillic alphabet. I see "Zemun" on a store sign eventually, overshoot my destination by 1 stop then walk back. Doable but shows that LP descriptions can be very limiting.

The café/restaurant ...

Torn by War, Ready to Cafe

On my redeye bus, I have to sit next to someone. The seat is smaller than normal. Limited sleep as I can't find any position that is comfortable. I arrive in Belgrade at sunrise. At the hostel, I arrive before any of the guests are up. Many hostels allow early arrivals like me to shower and drop off my bag. They even offer me a cup of Turkish coffee. It is really good. This type of coffee is made by boiling the ...

... we are world champions at changing subjects and talking like teenagers). When I finally got to sleep a mosquito started buzzing in my ear. SO I pulled up the covers over my head and tried to sleep in my defensive stance. I finally fell asleep when cats started fighting (or loving?) under my window. I chased them off but they came back twice! Annoying. Then I heard this weird snorting noise and when I went out to investigate I saw the neighbor ...

... day it enters up into heaven. On this day, everyone gathers around the grave and the priest performs the ritual asking God to accept the soul. For this ceremony we needed coffee, red wine, cognac, special bread, cooked buckwheat, candles, incense, and other things I cannot remember. So on the day before we were all over the place getting the things needed as well as cooking extra for guests that would come after the ceremony. We also managed to ...

... also had a birthday so he bought everyone a round of drinks, including a bottle of wine. The food here is very simple. Most restaurants offer grilled meats or sausages, tomato salad or grilled & marinated bell peppers and bread. And that's it. The main thing you have to choose is what type of meat you want. Not a place for vegetarians. Not just this restaurant, but all of Serbia. There may be more options in Belgrad, but I didn't get the chance to ...
