Barrea to Pescasseroli

A travel blog entry by heatherandjohn on May 29, 2015

... had mostly collapsed. It was still very scenic though. We saw a sounder of wild boar (I confess I looked up what the collective name for wild boar was) trotting not far from the path just as the thunder was starting to growl in the distance. As we got back to Pescasseroli, the rain started. Although John had been the one to look up the weather forecast, he hadn’t thought to pack his waterproof coat. We sheltered under a tree for a while but it was raining ...

Last day in Italy sadly. We went to the airport via Tivoli and a visit the Villa d'Este, which turned out to be more difficult to find than it should have been and once more TomTom took us through the cobbled back streets! Villa d'Este was worth the detour despite the heavy rain that kicked in part way round the gardens. Luckily we'd left the interior til last. The trip to Tivoli rounded off a fantastic 10 days in Italy. What a great holiday it's ...

Day 16 All roads lead to Rome

A travel blog entry by janetjoyjohnson on May 04, 2015

There are so many using selfie sticks and my arms are definitely not ...

Two days of Rome was enough. We may revisit the Vatican city on our way back if we feel we have missed out but right at this moment, we just want to escape the crowds and where better than the Appennino Mountains. There are still brown bear, wolves and lynx in this part of the country but our chances of seeing any are very slim as apparently they are very shy.

It's a national holiday so initially the drive from Rome is a nightmare. ...

Today we visit the town of Palestrina and the site of an enormous temple estimated to be around 3000 years old. Palestrina is only ten minutes drive from Zagarolo so only around thirty minutes from Rome and is built down a hillside. During the Second World War it was bombed and the destruction revealed the top part of the temple, where houses had been built on top of the temple completely hiding it. The day started with Ivano ...
