... there is a small village clustered round a temple. Varkala actually is well known not just as a backpacker hangout but also as a sacred Hindu site where, for centuries, Indian people have come to bless their recently deceased relatives. After puja at the temple, it is then customary for them to walk down to the beach and scatter the ashes of their loved ones in the sea...fortunately this is done a bit of a way away from the backpacker section of the beach. In short, nothing special, but a nice relaxing day after a continental breakfast this morning and the Indian masala donsai I found at Temple Bar, run by a Londoner and with a beautiful young Italian waitress . We also met a welsh lad who was excited to tell us about his quest to try some opium in the next town north simply because his mate said it was (in a welsh accent) 'absolutely brilliant'.

... Turns out the bridge is a series of little islands and is impassable via car/train. The ferry apparently stopped running due to the Tamil Tigers in north Sri Lanka.
