The Power of Context - Am I Chinese or What?

... than the locals, that I used not just shampoo but conditioner too... or that they may have overheard my English... wow, how could it be so good? Of course! I must have studied there and not am back "home" haha.
"Actually, I like your Chinese" - Some people even said that they prefer my accent or rather, lack of the Beijing accent. A lot of words get blurred together in the Beijing accent and I didn't learn to speak that way ...

We Made It To The Olympics!

We finally made it to the Olympics!!  OK Just a few months too late, but there wasn't the crowd, and the competition was much easier - we even got to take our Gold Medals home with us this afternoon!    The cab ride across Beijing to the Olympic Village was interesting none the less.   We took 2 cabs for a total of $8.   In the US it probably would have been a total of $50+.    The Olympic National Stadium and Watercube were much ...

DAY 5 BEIJING

... and at the end we go down using the Tobogan... It was just great.

After expending almost all day at the Wall in our return to Beijing we went to the Olympic Park where the last Olympic Games where held; the Chinese people really knows how to do it; the Water Cube and the Bird Nest were breathtaking a marvel of engineering.

Day 15 Onboard and arrival in Beijing

Day 15 Friday 16th January - Onboard and arrival in Beijing. Got up at 8am as the views were supposed to be nice as we go through China. All we saw was lots of mountains from the train and lots of poor areas with run down houses and rubbish tips. As we pulled into Beijing there were lots of power stations and large chimneys, it looks very industrial. As we pulled up in the station it was packed so we waited on the ...

... to the Natural History Museum and saw some impressive Dinosaur fossils. We then ended up in Jingshan Park and got some impressive views of the city from the hill top. That evening we went to the Night Market. This place was awesome, selling all sorts of weird and wonderful food. I ate some chicken and ostrich kebabs and even tried some small scorpions (taste like a ready salted crisp!) Day 5 - Our destination was the Summer Palace, some 20km outside the ...

Lectures, Lunch, and the Forbidden City...

... map and try to name the places we are at. We are on a tight schedule and only have a short amount of time to cross the complex and get to the other side. I am filling in Susan and Margot with the names of the special gates, Margot is standing in the gate of prosperity , this one must be the gate of .....no, wait. Something is wrong. Darn, I am facing the wrong way. We didn't come in the popular entrance at the north gate ...

Week One

... their buckets with water to douse the fires.  At one point, the emperor suspected that the eunichs were stealing from the royalty and ordered inventories to be taken.  Fearful of the consequences, the eunichs began setting fire to their warehouses.  The problem was solved when the emperor fired all of the eunichs, forcing them to leave the city.      b.  The emperor had over 400 concubines.  Though these concubines led leisurely lifes (sounds boring to me, but was better than ...

Beijing: Jetlag and jollity! (part two)

... turns! Their history dates back eight hundred years and they are regarded by many as a window into Beijing life. A stroll through the hutongs is sure to contain numerous sights and sounds, such as old folk playing chess or cards during the day, whilst at dawn and dusk groups often gather to practice taijiquan or to sing and dance to folk songs or Peking opera arias. My first impression is "sweet!" The area is alive with locals, not too many tourists. Our lodgings ...

Bejing

Alright folks, Havent put anything on in a while I know. A mixture of laziness and lack of time. But I will try and get things up to date now. I will also get some photos up soon too....... Arrived in Bejing on friday 13th of all days. We arranged to meet up with everyone after checking into our hotels/hostels at 7.30 to go on the rip. Since we were all new to Bejing we decided to meet under a landmark that we would all know, the picture of ...

... where the fun lay. The people of China have a reputation for eating all kinds of crazy foods. Having walked many of their streets and eaten at many restaurants, we were finding this to be untrue. Much like the people of Canada who eat their pierogies with maple syrup (Bryan), or put ulcer-ific quantities of lemon juice in their water (Lyndsay), those who have strange tastes in ...
