... giant supermarket" and "playing soccer and running around the [really nice] track." I'm not envious at all...I ran up the stairs today so HA! Our stairs even have gold plated edges...bet your track doesn't even have that.
I found out some information yesterday that tells me that I am either very unlucky, or that everyone else is just much more lucky than I am. Turns out that both Karen and Brian were on a flight from Hong Kong that had a passenger with ...
... sit down at a PH or Papa Johns, just think that you are eating some of the best food in Beijing. Other than those, there are a few from our class field trip around Beijing, mostly from Tiananmen Square. Don't worry, they have rerouted roads across it, erected many long crow control barriers, and stationed police everywhere for mine and the people's protection. Enjoy. And then on to Yunnan!
Beijing, China jonathanray... gave us a big sweaty hugs and asked us to sit at their table! The placed was filled with people from all over the world, and the ceremonies were playing on several large screens. Perfect! Our favorite server brought us drinks and said "These are 'in the house'!" :o) They were all so fired up and having a great time. We enjoyed delicious food served to us personally by the chef. When Gregg wanted a local Chinese beer ...
Beijing, China chregg... have a chinese guide! The guide sent us off up the wall and by up we mean up. Sections were at about a 70 degree incline and so we were almost on our hands and knees! It was steps all the way, up to the 12th tower with about 150-200m between each. That night we went to see the Kung Fu show and it was our guides birthday so we took him out for a drink to celebrate! Yesterday we went to see the Forbidden City and Tian'anmen ...
Beijing, China nicola.hopkins... of possessions, of a life lived solely for idyllic desire? I felt ordered away, never to return anywhere but to keep moving, in some Oriental destiny of Confucian design. This was not some play recited to denounce the industrious west for the nature of the east, or to glorify tradition in the face of modernity. No, this scene was far beyond any framework of mundane human reckoning. The man's patience was eternal, his bird's perhaps even more ...
Beijing, China aaron_dearborn... statues. This is because Tibetan Buddhism is a mix of your standard Buddhist philosophy and ancient Tibetan animism. So you don't just have one Buddha in the temple - you have Buddha and a herd of Bodhavistas or some crazy multi-armed guys that look like nothing more than the Hindu Bhairab. You will remember from Nepal that Bhairab is the fiercest incarnation of Shiva. Interesting. So there were bundles of buildings and bigger ...
Beijing, China youngtravellers... we've been wearing. For a very socialist country we have been surprised with the capitalist appearance of the city - it's people and shops. The number of people everywhere is overwhelming. Construction throughout the city is prolific with multiple cranes (ten or more in any view) on the horizon - all building for the future olympics. There aren't as many bicycles in downtown Beijing. Apparently the government encourages people to use the ...
Beijing, China janeandmal... they say that they have them for rent here at the hostel. The bikes are 2 dollars per person, for the day! This has got to be one of the best deals in the country. So we pay the hostel and go out to the bikes. After getting on the bikes, we realize that at 2 dollars a day, we grossly over paid. Chad's bike has no brakes on the front or back, Liz's brakes are mediocore at best, Trey has a flat back tire, my bike has plastic wheels and the seat is loose as a goose. Besides that they ...
Beijing, China ckodiak... Chinese attire. We didn't have a lot of time in Xi'an on our last day so we visited a market on the way to the airport. They had tons of fake designer goods which looked just like the originals. I heard they have the same stuff in Vietnam even cheaper, so I decided to wait until then. After the market we went to eat dumplings which were delicious. We tried about 20 different varieties including chicken, pork, walnut, and pumpkin. We also drank some rice ...
