Today we were going to sleep longer, and theoretically that is true. At 8 we leave the hotel. Leaving Lanzhou behind we began to truly pass into China's enigmatic West, along the Lanzhou-Urumqi bullet train line which would be the spine of the next fortnight of our trip. ... I must admire my mother not only can she take the pace but the woman, when she does sleep, can sleep through bloody anything. Not only did she sleep in the afternoon through them rebuilding the hotel around us but slept through a staff member walking around with her radio after 10pm.
