Lovely Lijiang

Tuesday 12th August Alison: It was night and drizzling by the time we arrived in Lijiang, a lovely village nestled in the mountains of northwest China on a plain 2,400 metres high. We collected our luggage, piled it all into a taxi and drove into town. We were staying in the Old Town which did not allow any traffic, so we waited at the corner for an old man who piled it all onto his tricycle and walked the 10 minutes or so to the Zen Garden hotel with the concierge. Our room was very small b...

Return to the Mother Ship

After five days in dusty dirty Kathmandu one is more than ready to peace out. But after five days at the Hyatt Regency Kathmandu living the 5 star life by shamelessly mooching off of Fuj's sister and coworker we were clinging to the crisp white bed sheets, sparkling toilet bowls, plethora of toilet paper and basking in steam room and jacuzzi for probably 10x the recommended time. Tearing myself from the Hyatt was quite an effort. But this trip to Nepal has been amazing aside from this experie...

Commercialization for Preservation

This entry takes on a somewhat more serious note and hopefully will not land me in CCP prison ;). Is commericalization today's form of preservation? Examples: the Dalai Lama, Planet Earth, Epcot Center, Indian Reservations, the Zoo, outdated politicians, and now, the Naxi (Nahi) minority located here in Lijiang in Yunnan Province, China. Lijiang is a delightful place. Old Town bustles with tourists all eager to spend, to see, taste, and especially to photograph. Its quaint cobblestoned street...

Tiger Leaping Gorge and back to Lijiang

We had a really great night's sleep on some of the most comfortable beds we have experienced in most of our China, Mongolia and Tibet travels although, given our combined state of stress and exhaustion, we could have slept anywhere! After sitting looking at the fantastic views while we ate a delicious breakfast of coffee, fruit with muesli and yoghurt and banana and honey pancake we set off on our morning walk. We are part of a fortunate group of people who are lucky enough to have seen Tiger...

Day 5 - Chil-li-ang in Li-ji-ang

Day 5 - Chil-li-ang in Li-ji-ang You know all those commercials that show somebody jumping out of bed in the morning and throwing open their swing windows (they MUST be swing windows, no other kind will do) to the fresh morning air and bright morning sunshine? Then they strut around with this smile on their face and try to sell you some schlock product like dryer sheets or toothpaste or assault rifles? (Ok, maybe not assault rifles) Well, I still don't know about all those schlock products, b...

Day 6 - Service like nowhere else

Day 6 - Service like nowhere else (sorry, the rest of the blogs are mostly just notes, but since I'll probably never get around to finishing themt, I'll go ahead and post them) Blogged in morning Rebecca did laundry by hand (don't worry, I did it the next time) Paid for room Asked about these amazingly wonderful fuzzy blankets laying on our bed in the room. Lady at the hotel said they were 300 quai, and she would go out and get 2 of them for us. They should be waiting in our room when we got ...

Day 7 - Thunderstorms and Pirate Swings

Day 7 - Thunderstorms and Pirate Swings Watched Lijiang TV for a bit in the hotel room. They only have like 3 channels. One seems to be 24 hour soaps (in old traditional sets and costumes), and one seems to be gameshows all the time. All of them had the audio dubbed really poorly, and they all had chinese subtitles (probably due to the language difference) Breakfast/lunch at the Prague café, we're sitting here listening to the best of Nat King Cole, such a great change of pace from the horrib...

Historical Traveler Reviews of Zen Garden Hotel Lijiang

As good as it gets !!

from Gordonray
We stayed at the Zen Garden Hotel for 2 nights & we loved it !!!

Charming place with styl, greatly located 20 meters away from the old town but very peacfull !! Rooms are nice not very big but OK considering what is available here unless you want to stay at the Banyan Tree outside of town.

Boiling shower a luxe in China, Chinese TV cable would be nice. Free wifi in the lobby. Great staff, not fluent in English but WILLING to HELP and service minded. Breakfast could be better but for 400 yuan net a night all included.

Fantastic place to stay!

from kesignu
This is a fantastic place to stay! The hotel is located on a quiet road just off the main tourist streets in Lijiang. The staff were really helpful and arranged a taxi pick-up for us from the airport and also arranged for a private taxi to take us to Tiger Leaping Gorge and then on to Shang-ri-la which was our next destination. The pick-up from the airport is a really good idea as I can imagine finding the hotel in the small roads of Lijiang being very hard without a local to follow (it also means you have someone to carry your bags!). To arrange the taxi we just rang the hotel number and, since the owner speaks very good English, it was simple.

The rooms are on the small side but have lovely furniture and good bathrooms. The main attraction of the hotel is its lovely mutlilevel courtyard (Zen Garden) with coy carp pool and it is a very peacful place to have breakfast or an afternoon cup of jasmine tea. Also on some mornings, during breakfast, there is a local Naxi musician playing in the courtyard for the guests which is a beautiful way to be woken up!

We had the room on the ground level opposite the reception and the breakfast room. I would say that this room would have a chance of being disturbed by people talking outside but the owners seem to be very aware of this now given the earlier review and we were not disturbed at all. There were even concerned as to whether we had been disturbed during an afternoon nap never mind during the night! To be sure of a quiet room though, I would ask for one on the first or second floor, but since the hotel is often full this may not be possible.

Don't hesitate to book this hotel, it is a beautiful place to relax for a few days whilst exploring the old town of Lijiang!

Zen Garden - Nice Getaway

from gnv
Zen Garden was great. In old town lijiang and only 1 minute walk to the central square but also off on a nice quiet little alley. Perfect Location. Service was also quite nice.

Beautiful, scenic and in a traditional setting

from dglee
We stayed here for 3 nights in September (400 RMB per night). The hotel is about 40 mins from the airport (80 RMB) and is tucked away amongst the many old style chinese houses in Lijiang. The hotel itself is simply stunning and the room we were given was exactly what we had hoped for. The room was clean and the bathroom incredibly modern and clean. I agree with previous reviews about the management of this hotel. We booked the hotel weeks in advance and upon arrival, we were told by a young chinese girl who spoke near to no English that our booking did not exist and that the hotel was booked up(without even checking the records). We left after 10 minutes of trying to explain that we had a reservation. Only after trying the hotel next door (which was also full) did we go back to the Zen to have another go at explaining our situation. Another lady was behind reception when we returned and she found our reservation with little trouble (the girl who served us earlier apologised for her mistake). We didn't have any problems with noise but given the nature of the hotel (set around a courtyard with door to bedroom leading out onto it or onto a balcony if on the second floor) it can be a hazard. Overall, we didn't think much to the staff but the hotel is wonderful and in a fantastic location! An absolute gem at a great price. Word of caution though - remember to print off the hotel name in chinese - the taxi drivers speak NO english. You can find this and directions to the hotel in chinese on the web.

Extremely disturbing night

from Patfung
It is a lovely hotel, but it is too noisy to get a good sleep. People are sitting outside your room near your window and talk in the middle of the night.

There are two chairs outside your room and people will not care whether you are sleeping or not. They will talk until you can't take it and yell for "shut up and go back to sleep".

I have stayed there for two nights and shouted for two nights. The first night was the worst, the hotel allowed outsiders to sit outside my room and let them talk.

Again this is a very nice hotel, if the management can pay more attention to improve the condition, then I am strongly recommended to stay in this hotel.

Enjoying peace and tranquility

from Dwong
Had a memorable experience staying in the Zengarden, unfortunately only manage to stay 3 nights due to the over booked. A small/compact (similar to most Lijiang inns) but my family prefer clean, quite and do enjoy peace and tranquility while spending time togather and enjoying the beautiful night view of lijiang. (especially after a full day of walking & hectic shopping)

The staff are excellences too, we strongly recommend this hotel.

A good quality small guest house

from bluemorpho23
Spent 4 nights in the Zen Garden Hotel. It is one of those little guest houses were you are made to feel really welcome. The owner and staff are genuinely friendly helpful people and that comes across in everything they do.

Obviously, it is not a 5 star, it has far more character than that, but the rooms are clean, with nice furnishings and sheets, rooms have tv and phones. The rooms are not that large, but really fine for a short stay.

The view over the town from the balcony upstairs is really lovely too. It is in a great location - quiet but close to the action.

You will never find it (unless you speak Mandarin perhaps) without printing the Mandarin description that is on the website. At the airport we handed to the taxi driver, who took us to the drop off point, called the hotel who came to meet us and carried our bags all the way to the hotel (there is no traffic in the old town). We don't speak Mandarin.

Once we were shown to our rooom, we were then given some hot water for tea and some welcome cake!

Simply lovely

from myrnarock
a lovely quiet hotel, well appointed and charming. as a bed and breakfast, the food was somewhat lacking and the rooms a little small but well worth the experience. we would never look elsewhere for accommodations in lijiang.

Fabulous little jem

from A TripAdvisor Member
In the turistically busy city of lijiang, packed with local turist and shops, this little oasis is a lovely place of rest and armony.

The hotel owner speaks english very well and is always ready for a friendly conversation about habits and history of China. The view is great and the lobby furniture is carerfully selected.

Best hotel during our one month stay in China. we strongly reccomend it.

Zen Garden Hotel - Perfection!

from A TripAdvisor Member
Lijiang is absolutely lovely - a charming, cobblestoned maze of alleys and canals that are delightful to get lost in : ) The small Zen Garden Guest House/Hotel is nestled in quaint and quiet residential area in the heart of the old-town (just a 2-minute walk away from the busier touristy alleys). The ownder speaks English and is delightful - there are less than a dozen rooms, all clean, bright, and beautifully decorated. The small lobby and tea room are incredibly beautiful. I loved my stay here....Beware,,,there are TWO Lijiang's in China...this one is in the Yunnan Province, air flights via Kunming.
