September Already?!?!

I can't believe that we are already into September and that it is time for school to start up again in the states. It is weird to hear about my friends returning to Winona and not being there with them. I hope that everyone enjoys their last weekend before the end of summer. This week has been a busy one at school. It was my last week before all my extra classes start so I was busy getting ready for all those and I had a few curve ...

Here Comes the Sun!

The rain has finally let up here in Taichung. This comes as much relief for much of Taiwan after the typhoon moved through. As I am sure most of you have seen on the new some parts of Taiwan were hit with a lot of flooding because of the typhoon. This week has brought us a break from all that rain. Today we actually had sunshine all day! It made for a hot day but it was really nice to see the sun shining!

On Monday I went with some ...

Another Busy Week

... poncho normally zipped all the way up the front but the zipper began opening from the bottom up. By the time I got home my jeans were completely soaked! It is times like these that I miss my truck! But when I am filling up my scooter with gas ($3 of gas lasts a week) it makes me love my scooter! Once we got home from the museum and done battling the rain we were tired and called it a night.

The weekend went by really fast and Monday snuck right up on me. My roommate and I ...

Relaxing Days

... are very loud and energetic (to say the least)!

This weekend has also been nice. I stayed in Taichung to explore and get some rest. On Friday night I went out with some teachers to see some live music at a bar called 89K. I got a little taste of home...they had the Twins game on the TV! I was excited! Even though it was a taped game and I knew that they were going to lose it still made me feel like I was at home. It was fun to get out and meet some other foreigners in Taiwan ...

Grilling Out with Chiayi

... would be no brats. There would be no potato salad, there would not even be hamburgers. No, instead we were told by those teachers who were in attendance last year to be prepared for anything. I started to sweat with nervousness. Chiayi led us by scooter-caravan to her house on the other side of town where we were going to grill out. She was visibly excited to have people over to her house and was eager to get the food prepared and on the ...

Sun Moon Lake

After determining we haven't done anything "cultural" for the past two weekends, we decided to take a small road trip back into the mountains to visit one of Taiwan's more popular tourist destinations, Sun Moon Lake. The name Sun Moon Lake comes from the fact that, according to the locals, the lake looks like a combination of a sun and a crescent moon. Although we all looked at a map and tried to make this connection and had very little luck. Sun Moon Lake is to ...

The Olympics!...... or not

... version of the story, but I guess the United Nations or the International Olympic Committee has not recognized Taiwan as an official country out of fear that it could increase political tensions with China. Therefore, the nation must bring their "Olympic flag" to the games and not their official national flag due to the fact that they are not an officially recognized country, even though they have the tenth best economy in the world at the moment.

The "First" Day of School #2

... about the necessity to be flexible as an educator and began organizing my things to begin teaching third grade the next morning. I came to school the next morning and was just emotionally drained from all of the events of the past few weeks. I really did not want to get out of bed, and no matter how much coffee I drank, I just couldn't find the energy to get excited about teaching a third grade class for my ...

Field Day!

... humidity), you need to realize that these Taiwanese students are only given 40 minutes of outdoor play per week. It is even less when the regular school year starts rolling along (15 minutes per week). So when an opportunity arises to go outside, hang out with their teachers, and throw a Frisbee around for three hours, they take full advantage of the opportunity... and a smile never leaves their faces. It was a lot of fun and I am anxious for our next two field trips.
