... only minimal clouds around the peak of Mt Fuji, which allowed great photo opportunities. Our destination was Owakudani, a sulphar geiser that didn't have an overpowering stench, but if the sulphur cloud was blown in your direction from the wind you had to hold your breath. The fumes were abrasive to your lungs and is not a pleasant experience. The area is also known for black eggs, boiled in the geiser ...

Here the hot springs, erupting geysers and bubbling pools of boiling mud dominate a fascinating landscape. We take the Hakone rope way from Sounzan down to Togendai on lake Ashinoko. Our hotel tonight is more Crossroads motel than Hilton but we did pop across the road for an Italian (of sorts). The town here has an American drive-thru kind of vibe but it is also the place where we've seen the least English so far. It's back to Tokyo tomorrow and goodbye to rural ...

... got cold by the end of the day. Luckily we'd planned for a hot spa caper again, it really is the only thing to do when it's wet! I don't have photos for today, sorry, will load some up at the end of the trip (not sure who I'm telling this to, the odd thing about writing a blog is the thought that you are just writing it for future-you to ...
