We thought we were pretty good at catching trains. This morning we managed to catch the wrong one which set us back a couple of hours. Quite a few train changes required in our trip to the Izu peninsula which is (normally) a couple of hours south of Tokyo. We packed up our gear and I'm glad we took the approach of having a base for a week and doing day trips, rather than packing up an switching accommodation every day or two. From here you should be able to see Mount Fuji on a clear day, but it is hazy and Fuji-san, shy as he is, is hiding. We continue the winding road overlooking the awesome coastline. We notice two small rocky islands close to each other and connected by a thick rope. Could these be two sacred ...

... harbor. But what happened here with the Russians in 1855? Commodore Matthew Perry sailed to Japan twice. In 1853 he presented Japanese delegates with a letter from U.S. President Fillmore. He hoped to open up trade with Japan. After presenting the letter Perry left for the coast of China, promising to return for a reply. Commodore Perry returned to Japan in 1854 to find out that the Japanese had prepared a treaty accepting almost ...
