... the disaster, you could tell it meant a lot to the guy to show us around his town with the usual boundless Japanese enthusiasm it was a very personal account of the disaster which I felt very lucky to have experienced. ... WE LOVED: - Millie thinking she was ordering mochi but being presented with 3 balls of "devil's tongue" (see Day 17!) and a smear of mustard. Disgusting!! After forcing one down and almost throwing it up again, she sneakily hid them in a tissue until she could find a bin! - the BEAUTIFUL surroundings, incredibly peaceful and spiritual, the route even goes past a waterfall - meeting a mountain goat and a snake on the same ...

... we were treated to lovely views of forests, snowy mountains and pretty rivers with blue rapids. When we arrived it was around noon so we headed straight to the river which was supposed to be lined with the sakura for our picnic. Unfortunately we were just three days too late for the bloom. We were a little disappointed but it was still very pretty by the river and on the way we had seen some trees in town that still had pink flowers.
