    ... road shouldn’t be a 6 hour trip during at least heavy rain, maybe a bit of typhoon.

    A cheaper and easier option would be to find a hostel for one night and then see what I do tomorrow. Still at the desk, I request the onna no hito to direct me towards Kagoshima’s cheapest establishment, at the same time getting in touch with the host I had planned for that night to tell him of my change in plans.

    Just Japan now, off the beaten track, the best way to see it, with a guided and a small group of 11. Starting with Kyoto, an ancient capital off to beautiful towns offering lovely warm baths, even a fish spa! And the water just flows constantly through.

    ... people waving these toys out of car windows. As the weather was closing in, we didn't bother getting out of the train at the most of the stations anymore. I did come out once with Des. One of the train staff came out to hold an umbrella over us.

    ... are 5 Johns in this tour group, so it gets a bit confusing) had lunch at the small noodle place in the station. It was that small that I had missed it completely. The udon noodles there were delicious, maybe because we were starving by that stage. There was a roasted chestnut place across the road so I darted off to buy some. Not as large and not as tasty as the ones at the roadside diner that Shigeki took us to.

    Next day (Sunday) we had the restored steam train #58654 from Kumamoto to Hitoyshi then

    SL Hitoyoshi from Hitoyoshi to Yoshimatsu

    through rural Japan stopping 2-3 times at lovely wooden 100 yr old stations. Some stations had food available such as Nashi pears and tempura vegetables
