He mentioned that the sailing center was just a few miles down the road and we found out that the instructor there was a former student of my father's! We made our way to the sailingcenter ...

Unfortunately the wind was too light to actually pull me up on a board in the water but I thought I might as well connect up my lines and fly my kite on the beach to dry it out (this takes a whole lot less wind). At any rate, I put my big 15m kite away a little damp over a week ago at Ichinomiya Beach near Tokyo and I haven't had a sunny day or lots of space in abundance until today. Whilst Sakurajima is relatively docile – the last major lava eruption was in 1914 – it is still a very active volcano, so you can't climb it. The whole island is prepared for the worst, and has safety systems set in place, so historically there have been very few casualties as a direct result of the ...

So it was another short hop down to Kagoshima for the day, it looked a fairly long way from Kumamoto but using the bullet trains it's always a quick trip! I'd made the day trip to visit nearby Sakurajima and its ever erupting volcano, on arrival I jumped on a tram across town for the short ferry ride from Kagoshima and on arrival at the port lo and behold the top of the peak started to billow ash and smoke, quite an impressive sight, it didn't last long but ...
