We thought we were pretty good at catching trains. This morning we managed to catch the wrong one which set us back a couple of hours. Quite a few train changes required in our trip to the Izu peninsula which is (normally) a couple of hours south of Tokyo. We packed up our gear and I'm glad we took the approach of having a base for a week and doing day trips, rather than packing up an switching accommodation every day or two. It took about an hour to pack about a quarter of ...

We are excited to be in Kyoto now. Kyoto used to be Japan's capital ( for over a thousand years) before Tokyo became capital in 1869. So there is so much culture and history here. The most amazing displays were the collection of kaleidoscopes and Chinese jade and ivory carvings. Some nice modern Japanese art as well.

... the village the narrow road snakes back up and after a while connects with the 136 again. The road goes through many tunnels, the vistas are beautiful, unfortunately you can't stop anywhere to take it all in and take pictures because of the narrow, winding road. At Lovers' Cape there is a large parking lot and we stop there. There is a small gift shop and a small shrine and a hiking trail takes you to an observation deck where you can ring the Love Call Bell. It's a ...

... train attendant passes out moist towels and takes drink orders. We get complimentary coffee or tea. For quite a while the train drives through Tokyo and its suburbs and after a while we see less houses and more green and finally the ocean. We get off the train in Atami and walk to the Nippon Car Rental across the station. Another Subaru Imprezza is waiting for us. Between Atami and Ito it is more populated than ...
