... devastating earthquake in 1997. A Daoist temple was entirely destroyed with the roof crashing everything else (because it was so heavily decorated). It was left as a memory for all the people that died, and a new replica of it was built right in front. ... recycling and the environment. Driving through the mountains and bush reminded me of NZ at times, except that there were so many tropical plants. We had a thunderstorm most afternoons, but they were over within 20 mins or so, so no real problem.

I totally recommend a visit, and would love to go back again myself, as I've only seen a very small part of the country.

... teaching in Jia Li in the house of a humble and magnanimous couple. After getting his phD in Chemistry, the father of this household, who wishes to remain unnamed, opened his house to children from disadvantage homes to come study at his house free of charge. Most of them were still attending elementary school. As we were there on the students' summer vacation, our purpose was to lead an English teaching summer camp.

... was a 4 Km walk uphill to the mushroom farm that we wanted to visit. There were many mushroom farms and people processing and selling mushrooms on the way.
