Harbin is proud to call itself "Ice City". From October to April, temperatures remain below freezing. In spite of the weather, Harbin is a thriving metropolis of 10 million people, China's 8th most populous and farthest North city, 300 miles from the Russian border. ... of me inside, I had to wonder, how any one of any real size would be able to enter these cubbies. Rosemary also told me that while I was taking out money the girl next to me actually got stuck, the door would not slide open even when pushing the release button! We grabbed a coffee/Hot Chocolate and headed for the Songhua River, where the Harbin Winter Carnival was hosted. My hotel was an hour's walk away from the main tourist drag. How lucky was I that I had looked up a map online a few nights before arrival so at least I knew where it was in relation to the city centre. My guidebook had a small, undetailed map which I worked off for my trip. On Friday I went for a walk along the Songhua River, which was totally frozen over.
