Historical Traveler Reviews York Minster Hotel

Overpriced and poor service

from anonymous

I stayed at this hotel on a recent weekend away in York. It is in an excellent location and has an on-site free car park.

The hotel is in an extremely shabby condition and our bathroom was not cleaned to a satisfactory standard. There were no complimentary toiletries provided and the temperature and water pressure of the shower was inconsistent.

The staff were OK - they were fairly efficient but did not go out of their way to help. I was particularly disappointed to overhear one member of staff complaining to another about the level of moaning from the guests and the "unreasonable" demands that some guests were making - not very professional or welcoming!

The breakfast choice was limited and those serving seemed disinterested and forgetful.

The advertised tarrif of this hotel does not reflect the quality provided. Those who find cheaper deals than the £110 rate we paid may be more satisfied.

York is a lovely city and I look forward to my next trip there, however I will not be staying here again!

Shabby and Grubby

from Deborah_7

We have just returned from spending the weekend at this hotel. Do not be fooled by the plush appearance of the public areas namely reception/restaurant. Our room was shabby and drab and in need of urgent decoration. The en suite was awful and the old vinyl flooring hadn't been cleaned thoroughly for some time with dirt (other peoples hair) clearly visable. The shower consisted of an attachment over the taps.

Breakfast was unimaginative and boring with the coffee served in a vacuum flask.

It was convenient for town but that was all it had going for it. Over priced and the 3 star rating questionable.

No problem at the minster

from JK100

Stayed 4 days at the minster my wife and myself thought it was excellent.

Only 5 minutes walk from the actual minster, the breakfast was lovely and plenty of it, the staff on the whole were very pleasant, your bound to have one or two little niggles but for the price we paid I'd recommend this to anyone. Would use again without hesitation, and thats the acid test.

Second rate hotel

We have just returned from a weekend in York where we stayed at the Minster hotel. It is situated in a great location, just 2 minutes walk from the city walls, but unfortunately that is really the only good thing about this hotel. The room was average, despite having booked a large double. The bathroom was fine apart from having no shower gels, shampoos etc and having a shower attachment that could not be hung on the wall. After a long day walking round the city we could not have a relaxing shower as we had to hold the attachment and try not to soak the entire bathroom due to no screen or curtain. There was no mini bar in the room and the hotel bar did not open until 7pm so there was nowhere to get a cold drink. The bar itself was small and when we bought a vodka and orange it arrived with no ice and with orange squash instead of fresh orange juice!

The breakfast the next morning was a joke also. We waited nearly an hour after having placed our order, only to have a different member of staff ask if we had ordered yet. A further 15 minutes later we received a burnt breakfast. The price of this hotel is very expensive considering its facilities and complacent service - it appears to rely only on its good location. York is beautiful however, I would not recommend staying at the hotel.

Excellent location .......

We have just returned from spending four magnificent days in the city of York, residing at the Minster Hotel.

The staff at the hotel were excellent, both in manner and helpfulness, and the hotel itself was ideally located for visiting all the local tourist venues. Our accommodation was on a bed and breakfast basis and there was certainly plenty food to choose from for breakfast. The room was ideally located within the hotel to suit our age group (over 65) and was always clean and tidy. We also ate in the hotel on two of the evenings and the food was prepared and served to a high standard.

The weather was very good and this went a long way to making our walks around York a pleasant experience.

Well done to everyone that we met during our stay. Well worth a return visit.

Excellent location.

My husband and I stayed at the Minster Hotel for four nights in April as an anniversary break. As promised, the hotel is in an excellent position, just five minutes walk to the Minster and surrounding sites. Even closer is the Royal York Theatre, where we enjoyed a great performance. Check out what's on if you go to York. The room was fine and clean, and although we were at the back of the holtel, this ensured no street noise and perfect peace. Staff were always smart, friendly and polite. We would definitely go again.

Very Reasonable

from pico74

Spent 3 nights here recently - good quality 3 star hotel - clean, quiet and more character than equivalently priced chain hotels. Less than 5 minutes walk to the Minster, 15 from the train station

Good value for short break

from GrantsNorthumberland

spent 2 nights here 3rd-4th march. Very pleasant staff. Excellent weekday internet rate of 69 pounds per room including breakfast. Standard double room quite small but perfectly adequate for short break. Well situated for all tourist attractrions. Bonus of secure car parking for residents Would definately stay here again.

A pleasant place to stay in York

from george

Converted from a Victorian townhouse, this hotel has maintained the beauty and comfort oif the original.Pleasant public rooms and a great dining room .I had a full English breakfast included with my room rate,(65.00 pounds) All rooms en suite.Hotel is just a few yards from the York Minster and other city sights. The York double decker topur bus leaves from a nearby location and the train station is not too far away.

I'll stay here again if I have the chance.

Not for big folks with little wallets

from anonymous

This is a high energy place most guests are under 35. The rooms on many ships are bigger than the Hudson and I was told we had been upgraded, hate to see the regular rooms. This a fun place great bars! Many things in the room are available for purchase. I found the staff to be pleasant. I recommend that you go to the corner restaurant for breakfast, we had one breakfast in the hotel which consisted of, one order of french toast, two egg white omelets, three coffees and one orange juice. This came to $75.00, sorry I think thats stepping over the line. Same breakfast at the corner about $20.00.
