... but a few weeks earlier an international incident was sparked by the murder of 13 Chinese sailors on a cargo ship, somewhere in the northern Laos stretch of the river. The Chinese naturally suspended river traffic and closed the border on the Mekong. It was thought that pirates or drug smugglers carried out the killings but just a few days ago nine renegade Thai soldiers were arrested.
