... Apparently this area is famous all over China for its melons, so we stop at a small family-run services to buy some and the whole party shares one on the spot. Much refreshed we drive on, now with green trees and fields on one side and brown desert on the other. Waking up at 5.30 in the train is not so pleasant but we are rewarded by a beautiful sunrise over a flat desert backed by the snow-capped mountains of the 5-6,000 metre Qilian Shan. Jiayuguan is completely new city, built in the 1950s to service a new steel plant and the nearby satellite launch facility - sadly strictly off limits to us, but a lot of our fellow passengers disembark there.

We have noticed that the farther west we go we get more stares from the people, especially the men. We are entering the Muslim portion of China where most of the people are Uighur, pronounced Weeger.

It is time to get this day started and head for a new adventure. More to come. I am heading to the PANDAs today and that is more into the main part of China so hopefully I will be able to get the photos to you soon!

Slightly more sedate start to the day as we went all posh and hired ourselves a driver for the day. Luckily his English spoke and even more so written was good and so much better than my **** Manadarin. I have been smart enough to pleco or translate what i need into chinese characters and add them to my notes for future reference.
