(She had the most beautiful boots) The bus was filled with the tiniest bunk beds you've ever seen. Just about big enough for a short leprechaun to lie on his side and curl up his feet. (mild exaggeration only)

The bus ...

No where to sleep

We get dropped off at the Qingxu service station at 2:30am. There's a 24hr convenient store, we find a row of plastic seats and tries to make it until the sun comes up. We have been on the road nonstop for 18 hours, have to wait 7 more hours before we can find a bed.

Our guide's english name was Lucy, a young woman who just graduated with a degree as a tour guide. She met us at the hotel which was good since we had to change buses along the way. The weather was forecast to rain an ...

... of Xian - about an hour and a half bus ride. The bus ride was rough - everywhere we glanced, it seemed, there were dogs, which was uncanny since up to this day we had seen so few dogs in China. Even the bus seat covers had dogs on them!!! We missed, and still do miss, Seamus badly :( As it turned out, however, a hike up to Mount Hua Shan's west peak was just what we needed. I had initally feared that I had under-dressed ...

More Chinese than Chow Mein.

We were expecting to leave Beijing on a night train to Pingyao, this would take just 8 hours, most of which would be spent on a small but comfortable sleeper bed. Think again. Due to the completely backward and baffling way that train tickets are sold in China we had to settle for a hard seat in an over-crowded section full of people with ...

Beijing to Pingyao

We left Beijing for Pingyao on Tuesday (20th) on an overnight train from the enormous Beijing West Railway Station. We'd been advised to take soft sleepers as opposed to hard sleepers in China & were glad we did when we saw the hard sleepers. The soft sleeper was basically 4 bunks per compartment, which we shared with two Chinese men, one of whom spoke a bit of English & was a friendly guy. The other guy snored his head off for the entire night & we didn't get a wink of sleep. We had to ...
