    ... Bugger. So drop the packs and I went looking. About 20 minutes later after checking a couple of local guesthouses
    with no luck, I found a large hotel wanting $50 a night. Screw it. We had the cash and it was our last night in China and I really couldn’t be asked going any further…I must be getting soft. I trundled back to Tim and the bags and we dragged our weary butts back up there.

    ... side is the hotel down a narrow lane. Don't be shy, drive up the lane and the hotel is on the left, the restaurant on the right. The name? Check the photos. The tariff? Te5000ish per room. Friendly people, hot shower, old but clean and cosy. The road to Almaty is Ok for 90kph cruise. Seal is bumpy but unbroken(mostly), and not much traffic until near Almaty. Distance 400ks via Charyn Canyon or 322ks direct

    ... at the final hurdle and were turned back. Some problem with the paperwork.The soldiers were very helpful, courteous and interested in our adventure and we thought one of them wanted to buy the truck!! They gave us lots of valuable advice on Kazakhstan and appeared to be very sorry to turn us back. But not before we met a couple of convivial young French chaps (Susie would say spunky)! who were in the queue ...
