... We were lucky as the inner mongolian government insisted that the museum open 1 hr earlier than normal for us to have a private veiwing, before the drive to the capital of Hohhot. This was a change to the itinery which had us doing 200km for the next two days to now being closer to 600km for the detour. This is OK since we expect to have a welcome to the city, worthy of celebrities. When looking at a map of the extent of the Mongolian empire it ...

Sergei had started to teach us common Chinese symbols, which at first seems an impossible task but as you start to associate things with them and notice how they repeat or duplicate, they become more familiar. There are nearly 100,000 in total but only a small percentage ...

So I had to find a place to hang out for the National Day holiday, October 1-7. Side note on Chinese holidays, if they get holiday days everybody has to make up the days off on the following weekends, so they don't seem to get any days off.

I chose to go out to Hohhot, in Inner Mongolia, and take a tour of the grasslands and desert. ...
