    ... and after the bad start things got a whole lot better and I really got to like the country, its people and to enjoy the places I saw, even if was slightly rushed. It has an incredible wealth of history and sights which means there's plenty more to come back and see and I hope someday I will.

    I'd debated coming back through the Mont Blanc tunnel against the far longer but much prettier option of going over the mountain pass. To tick it off the list I decided to go for ...

    Back to Plymouth - and we overrode the GPS and headed for the A3 motorway that did not look like the shortest route home but it was the quickest. We can’t criticise the GPS too much - it has been great in finding our hotels and giving us advance warnings of roundabouts and motorway exits.

    ... Church. As we left this precinct we saw a sign pointing to the oldest surviving house in Plymouth, situated behind St Andrews Church so we went to have a look. The house, called Prysten House, was built in 1498 as a merchant’s house and now contains a restaurant called The Greedy Goose.

    Back at our hotel we checked in and are delighted to find that our room overlooks Sutton Quay an area with a marina, a number of restaurants and The Mayflower Steps.

    ... pebbly beach. In the museum a man was taking a mold of a recently found fossil. I stepped into The Royal Glen Hotel where young Princess Victoria stayed in 1819/20. She was narrowly missed by a gunshot fired by a youth hunting birds. I had just filled up on a delicious ice cream so I didn't stay for tea. The public library was nice, but didn't have a public restroom.

    There wasn't a bus stop in Salcombe Regis where the ancestors were buried so I hired a taxi. ...
