... then to Pazar. A much shorter loop than we had intended but we took the advice from a local seriously. Besides it had taken us FOUR hours to drive just 45 kilometers. It was another 5 km to Hemşın. We were back on smooth asphalt and Dave said "it feels like we have round tires again".

We had a full day tour of Trabzon today starting with the amazing Sumela monastery built on steep rocky cliffs in the 13th century in honour of the virgin Mary. The weather was cloudy when we set off from the hotel but as we climbed into the mountains it became sunny with a beautiful blue sky. Since we had a car and not a bus we were able to drive most of the way to the monastery, walking the last 300 metres up steep steps. Strangely enough we were enormously lucky and had ...

We arrived and found ourselves walking past the local mosque right around sunset, before we knew it, some guy was gently persuading / ushering us to go to the big tent that had been set up by the town council for Ramadan. Before we could really get out of it, we found ourselves with a plate of food being pushed into our hands and then we were pointed at a seat to go sit down at on big long communal tables. ... 4th breakfast. I'm liking Trabzon. I think I might even do a Superhike here in this area. Which leads to the question: should I go ahead and go visit that famous cliffside monastary a few miles south of here? Definitely on my must visit list--but on second thought, putting it off for another visit would give me something really cool to look forward to when I come back to this corner of the world...
