setting off from Quito, we departed with the tour to camp in Papallecta - described as 'high in the humid Andean could forest'; this was verified as we spent our night camping in a cloud. it was freezing. thank you to Megan whose Christmas money - spent on thermal underwear, thermal booties and a thermal sleeping bag liner …

... and dropped them on the Columbian side. SO, what you do is walk back to the Columbian side and wait for a yellow taxi to drop their load, and they will hapilly take you Tulcan (for $4.)

  • Bus from Tulcan to Quito (Carcelen bus terminal) took us 6 hours and cost $4.80 each.
  • Taxi from Carcelen to the historic center took an hour and should cost $8, but we paid $15.

    ... 7 a night each. The hostel itself is great; big communal kitchen, friendly people so far and WIFI so can do this! It also comes equipped with Canadians who have been in S. America for 9 months - useful tips a plenty no doubt.

    Well it's 1.40am old time, and although that's only 7.40pm here I'm aiming for bed soon. Enormity of the months ahead not quite sunk in, but being regularly bamboozled by Spanish is slowly doing the trick
