... this area so friendly. Families were all speaking to us and getting their children to say "hello'. We met a lovely old lady on the bridge in Changsha who told me I was beautiful and desperately wanted to have her photo taken with us. This is an area where they see many Chinese tourists, but very few foreigner tourists.

A really fantastic day, and definitely the highlight of our holiday for me!

... come back and explore more on Saturday.

We then went to find an Indian Restaurant. Unfortunately the one the Westin Hotel Conciage recommended was closed for the Spring Festival, but we were directed to another one, Taste of India, which was excellent, wonderful samosas and succulent chicken korma and chicken tikka.

... with a little park by the river. We had lunch in a the delightful "Orient Express" French Restaurant where the staff were lovely and helpful. Two old carriages have been made into dining cars. Weather permitting we plan to return for an evening meal during our stay.

An excellent first day in Guangzhou, in the old Cantonese region.

Traveled by overnight D Soft Sleeper train from Xiamen to Guangzhou, leaving at 17.45 and arriving at 06.30 this morning. The train was old and the facilities were not as good as when I traveled on a Chinese overnight train previously. This one had squat toilets and a wash hand unit which was stained and flaking and had clearly seen better days. Not a 5 star experience, but a Chinese experience nonetheless!

... to Chinese New Year, the entire school gets the month of February off. Zac and I have thus decided to take leave this month and explore South East Asia. I will be, for the first time, literally off the grid for a whole four weeks. I’ve yet to make a trip like this and I’ve done my best to ready myself. That includes: making a "tentative" month itinerary, print out all the flight information, book all the hostels, and budget my time abroad.
