Guilin and Yangshuo

Our visit to Yangshuo, around 1.5 hours drive from Guilin in South-West China, has definitely been the highlight of our 3 weeks in China. The karst mountain scenery (huge limestone peaks) is beautiful. We enjoyed the wonderful countryside on bikes, kayaks and treks. The photos speak for themselves!!

Yangshuo Mountain Retreat - Yangshuo,Guilin

Hello everyone, now we are in Yangshuo, arrived at 3 am in the morning of the 11th of July. Its was dark so we couldn't really tell were we exactly landed we just felt the bumpy dirt track for about 2 km leading to our new home...thats rural we thought...we definitely got the adventurous feeling traveling to the Yangshuo Mountain Retreat. The next day we woke up and saw the amazing landscape - karst formations as wide as you could look and the beautiful YuLong River right in front of our door...

Rural China - Countryside Yu Long River Valley

Whenever we have time we go for a walk or with a mountain bike to explore this amazing countryside. Our hotel is situated in the Yu Long River Valley. The Yu Long River is a tributary of the Li River and the property is about 15 min by car outside Yanghsuo town center. There is a dirt track which leads to the Yangshuo Mountain Retreat which can be very dusty and bumpy at times, but WE LOVE IT! It adds to the whole atmosphere, far away from everything and an authentic rural China experience. D...

Yangshuo town

Yangshuo town is a (for China) small town with about ? inhabitants. I cant really tell how many inhabitants and you cant really find out because there are sooo many tourist all around the year that the town seems much more crowded by people from outside of Yangshuo. The nice thing is that most tourists are Chinese, HOWEVER Yangsuo is the place in China where per square meter, you can find the most foreigners in China! And walking around you do see quite a lot of foreigners strolling through t...

Hot Air Balloon Flight

On our first wedding anniversary on the 5th of August 2007 the hotel treats us with a hot air balloon flight. The driver picks us up at 5.30 am in the morning! Still tired we enjoy the short ride there with a 4 wheel drive. When we got to an unfinished part of the new motorway at the outskirts of Yangshuo/GoaTian town area we already saw them preparing the balloons and the fire and gas of about 5 balloons really woken us up! As they asked us two to climb in (there was us and an older German c...

Dragon Cave

Dragon Cave, Moon Hill scenic area After our hot air balloon flight in the morning we went to the Dragon Cave just around the corner from where we live. It was very Chinese -meaning more meant to cater for Chinese tour groups wit a lot of tacky disco lights. But we had fun anyway taking lots of crazy pictures. The stalactites and stalagmites are not identified as individuals within the side of the cave, but more like an entire scene. Each scene seemed to have an appropriate name... the cooles...

Kayaking from Fuli to Puyi

This was another great experience - kayaking from a town called Fuli (approx. 30 min by bus from Yangshuo town center) to Puyi - 4 hours downstream on the famous Li River. We arranged a pick up in town and a guy drove us with the minivan to Fuli. In this fairly nice village which is quite nice and famous for the handmade production of painted fans in all sizes. we walk after the guy to a small garage at the banks of the Li River, here he pulls out two plastic kayaks gives one wooden (self-mad...

Moon Hill Mountain and Village

Hello, today we want to show you some amazing pics from our Moon Hill Hike at Sunset. The views were amazing and in the evening is actually the best time to climb Moon Hill because the heat is not as heavy anymore. We have also posted some pics from Moon Hill Village. The Resident Manageress of the Yangshuo Mountain Retreat is Little Fish and she often invited us home to her house. She had her second daughter in July, so she stayed home for three months. Historical Traveler Reviews of Yangshuo Mountain Retreat

Very nice

from patsydog
Very nice alternative to staying in town. The rooms are comfortable, but definately a little rustic. Our room faced the river and mountains which are lovely.

The hotel food is the only option here, unless you want to go to town in a taxi - $5,15 mins. and the food here is resonable and not bad, stick to chinese food however, don't even think about the "ceasar salad". The bikes we found to be only ok, not very comfortable, but the staff is very accomodating.

One thing to Know. The internet service has a nominal fee for use...BUT if you write a review (like on trip advisor) they will give you free internet for your stay. So temper these reviews with that knowledge.

We were hesitate at first to stay at this retreat because it was a half hour to the town of Yangshuo. It turned out to be the best part of our two week trip to China. The service was wonderful the rooms clean and food very good. Angel the desk clerk was very accommodating and patient. It is situated on a river very peaceful but they arrange for taxi service to wherever you would like to go.

We went into Yangshuo one evening and we were really glad we did not stay in town. It was so crowded, the food wasn't that good and much of the merchandise we had seen before in Beijing or Xian.

Highly recommended.

This really is Shangri-la...

At only 300 RMB/night (USD 40) I did not know what I was committing myself to. I live in China, but I was traveling with a friend from the US and knew that traveling off the grid could either way in China, but this place was worth EVERY penny. The rooms are very spartan, bathrooms are very simple, but everything is clean and the location/communal areas are fantastic. The food, both Chinese & American, in the restaurant is excellent, the breakfasts are esp. tasty. The rooms overlook a tributary of the Li River and you can take bamboo raft rides down the river for about USD 15. They have a couple of internet terminals for those of you that cannot live without internet, but seriously, this was the most peaceful, tranquil place in China. The only caution, this place is outside of Yangshuo, maybe 20 minutes, so if you are looking to hang out in the backpackers scene that is Yangshuo this may not be the best bet, but if you are looking to relax and enjoy the scenary book away!

Best accommodation in Yangshuo

from j_schuppener
We stayed at the Mountain Retreat for 2 nights in July and had a perfect time! The airconditioned rooms are basic but very spacious and clean. Getting one of the "river view" rooms is a must since you can have a great time relaxing on the balcony with one of the most beautiful landscapes in China stretched out right in front of you.

Food at the Retreat's restaurant is delicious and the staff is both professional and extremely friendly. Especially Angel at the reception is loved by everyone due to both her character and her astonishing abilities in organizing trips, transportation or anything else you could need.

You should be aware that the Retreat is located about 10 mins by Taxi out of downtown Yangshou. For us, however, this was one of the hotel's main advantages given the noise and crowds you are exposed to especially in West Street.

Highlight of our trip

from chilton
This was the highlight of our 3 week trip to China , We had a room with balcony overlooking the Jade Dragon river. For us it was an additional advantage that it was 10 mins. outside Yangshuo and in the countryside . One day (we stayed for 5 days ) we walked for 4 hours along country paths through villages and orange groves , then got a 1 hour trip back on a bamboo raft down the river and over the rapids (for about£7 ). There are plenty of walks in the areaand these incredible karst limestone hills rising straight up from the ground like a lunar landscape.

The rooms were plain, large ,clean and we had no trouble with flies etc, The staff were tremendous and we liked the ethos of the place - it was profit-sharing and they employed local people who were only too pleased to help. The meals and dining area were nice too. If you want the nightlife, then it's not for you (although we did go out one night to the spectacular light show, halfway between the retreat and Yangshuo) but if you want a quiet time and experience of the Chinese countryside, then its a great place to go to.

Tranquility at Mountain Retreat

from GeorgeMaybury
We sought a few days of peace and tranquility in a rural and picturesque part of China....and we found it at the Yangshuo Mountain Retreat.

We had arranged with the hotel to provide us with a taxi driver from Guilin airport to the hotel and back, and it worked perfectly. We even enjoyed a local meal during the outward journey with our driver.

Food at the hotel was excellent. Although somewhat basic by western standards the accommodation was clean and perfectly adequate.

The staff spoke excellent English, and were all very polite and helpful.

Highly recommended.

Yangshuo Mountain Retreat is wonderful

from Pedro_SF
Get a room with a view of the river and sit on your balcony and enjoy the scenery. This is a modest hotel which was wonderful. It is outside of town so the front desk will arrange for a taxi to pick you up or drop you off. Food in the restaurant was excellent too.

Great Place to relax

from Bubba&MaryJo
Our trip to China in September 06 was capped by the lovely time we spent at this great hotel. We booked direct with the hotel after reading about it in Wanderlust travel magazine, in fact the whole reason for going to China was sparked by seeing the hotel in the article.

We had decided to get the overnight train from Beijing down to Guilin and we were met at the train station by a taxi which we had arranged through the hotel. It's a good hours drive from Guilin. After a hectic holiday so far in China and our long train journey, the hotel didn't disappoint.

The hotel is run by an American owned "ethical" company which seems to put a lot back into the community. They teach their staff English and Angel on reception is a wonder!! We had booked a river view room with shower room. Well worth the money (£23 a night!!). Our room had an uninterupted view of the stunning countryside from its wide balcony. We had two big double beds and plently of room. The shower room was more a "wet" room with the shower hose just attached to the wall but we were glad of the shower to be able to cool down. Very hot and humid in September.

The breakfasts were great, you can have it chinese or western. We tried both but preferred the western selection. We ate in the hotel for dinner the first night and had lunch a couple of days and couldn't fault any of it.

The hotel sits right on the banks of the river. The river is very popular for tourists on river rafting trips (very sedate and peaceful) - the hotel can arrange this and many other trips. We also rented mountain bikes from the hotel for an afternoon.

The only slight niggle is that you run a tab at the hotel but you don't get a note of costs as you go along so you could end up with a hefty bill and not realsie it. But the hotel takes credit cards (but I think they added a small charge for this) so no real problem. Would we recommend it - YES. There are a couple of building projects looking as if they will spring up next to the hotel so get there fast before the peace is slightly shattered.

Good hotel

Stayed there for two nights in January. It was definitively off season and we were among the few guests in the hotel. Rooms were clean and warm, and the location of the hotel is right by the river so had amazing view. Only downside was the shower which did not have enough pressure (we were on the top floor). Don't expect fridge or phone in the room, it's all quite basic, but more than adequate. The staff is very helpful, spoke decent English and helped us plan our excursions. Food in the hotel was very good too. I would definitively go there again!
