Yanshuo and it's surroundings

A travel blog entry by andreasxian

Dinsdag 1 oktober:

Yangshuo, the Canmore of China

A travel blog entry by keithandkim

This is a top pick!

Our first night train in China went without a hitch, just a few minor things like trying to confirm in Chinese, (which unfortunately we do not speak) if we truly are on the right train, and that we do not get off the train at the one of 12 stops along the way and trying to order dinner in the dining car with entirely Mandarin menus. We can say it …

Cycling through the countryside

A travel blog entry by sasoz

Today I spent 3 hours cycling around the countryside. Stopping all over the place to take photos. We went to some old village and crossed the Yulong river a number of times. At first we were the only cycles on the road, but by 10.30 there were 100's of them. A lot of Chinese and Japanese tourists. We got back to the Mountain Retreat by midday. I …

Arrived in Yangshuo

A travel blog entry by sasoz

Well I finally got here. No Internet in Guilin, only during business hours. No wifi either. I also found out that Facebook is blocked in China, as is Twitter, Myspace, Linked in etc. Wow talk about total control, this is what our Government wanted to try and do. Anyway the only means of contact I have is by email and this site. I don't even know if …

In search of some quiet

A travel blog entry by jamella

After a rather packed schedule through China we had planned a stop in what promised to be a very serene place. Yangshuo is renowned for its stunning karst mountains with beautiful rivers meandering their way through fields of rice paddies. However, to get there we would have to take a 26 hour train ride – which actually isn't at all bad once …

If you're looking for a great place to stay around Yangshuo, this is it! The rooms have a beautiful view on the river and mountains, there is a big garden to relax and it has a very good menu. The staff is very friendly and they speak good English. They all try to remember you instead of your room number, which makes the atmosphere very good.

I would recommend it to everyone!

Lovely resort, good value, great food - in it's own picturesque spot on the river but close enough to everything. Very helpful staff - would go back

    Very nice

Very nice alternative to staying in town. The rooms are comfortable, but definately a little rustic. Our room faced the river and mountains which are lovely.

We were hesitate at first to stay at this retreat because it was a half hour to the town of Yangshuo. It turned out to be the best part of our two week trip to China. The service was wonderful the rooms clean and food very good. Angel the desk clerk was very accommodating and patient. It is situated on a river very peaceful but they arrange for taxi service to wherever you would like to go.

We went into Yangshuo one evening and we were really glad we did not stay in town. It was so crowded, the food wasn't that good and much of the merchandise we had seen before in Beijing or Xian.

    Highly recommended.

    This really is Shangri-la...

At only 300 RMB/night (USD 40) I did not know what I was committing myself to. I live in China, but I was traveling with a friend from the US and knew that traveling off the grid could either way in China, but this place was worth EVERY penny. The rooms are very spartan, bathrooms are very simple, but everything is clean and the location/communal areas are fantastic. The food, both Chinese & American, in the restaurant is excellent, the breakfasts are esp. tasty. The rooms overlook a tributary of the Li River and you can take bamboo raft rides down the river for about USD 15. They have a couple of internet terminals for those of you that cannot live without internet, but seriously, this was the most peaceful, tranquil place in China. The only caution, this place is outside of Yangshuo, maybe 20 minutes, so if you are looking to hang out in the backpackers scene that is Yangshuo this may not be the best bet, but if you are looking to relax and enjoy the scenary book away!

    Best accommodation in Yangshuo

We stayed at the Mountain Retreat for 2 nights in July and had a perfect time! The airconditioned rooms are basic but very spacious and clean. Getting one of the "river view" rooms is a must since you can have a great time relaxing on the balcony with one of the most beautiful landscapes in China stretched out right in front of you.

    Highlight of our trip

This was the highlight of our 3 week trip to China , We had a room with balcony overlooking the Jade Dragon river. For us it was an additional advantage that it was 10 mins. outside Yangshuo and in the countryside . One day (we stayed for 5 days ) we walked for 4 hours along country paths through villages and orange groves , then got a 1 hour trip back on a bamboo raft down the river and over the rapids (for about£7 ). There are plenty of walks in the areaand these incredible karst limestone hills rising straight up from the ground like a lunar landscape.

    Tranquility at Mountain Retreat

We sought a few days of peace and tranquility in a rural and picturesque part of China....and we found it at the Yangshuo Mountain Retreat.

We had arranged with the hotel to provide us with a taxi driver from Guilin airport to the hotel and back, and it worked perfectly. We even enjoyed a local meal during the outward journey with our driver.

Food at the hotel was excellent. Although somewhat basic by western standards the accommodation was clean and perfectly adequate.

The staff spoke excellent English, and were all very polite and helpful.

    Highly recommended.

    Yangshuo Mountain Retreat is wonderful

Get a room with a view of the river and sit on your balcony and enjoy the scenery. This is a modest hotel which was wonderful. It is outside of town so the front desk will arrange for a taxi to pick you up or drop you off. Food in the restaurant was excellent too.

    Great Place to relax

Our trip to China in September 06 was capped by the lovely time we spent at this great hotel. We booked direct with the hotel after reading about it in Wanderlust travel magazine, in fact the whole reason for going to China was sparked by seeing the hotel in the article.

    Good hotel

Stayed there for two nights in January. It was definitively off season and we were among the few guests in the hotel. Rooms were clean and warm, and the location of the hotel is right by the river so had amazing view. Only downside was the shower which did not have enough pressure (we were on the top floor). Don't expect fridge or phone in the room, it's all quite basic, but more than adequate. The staff is very helpful, spoke decent English and helped us plan our excursions. Food in the hotel was very good too. I would definitively go there again!
