... road, only by plane or boat, probably because there is NOWHERE within a 6 hour drive!!
Iquitos was once one of the most important trading towns in Peru, it was colonized by the Spanish in the mid 16th century and has been pillaged by many European traders since. The German guy Fitcarrald established himself here and proceeded to help himself to all the minerals, he is liked and despised equally by the natives ...
Iquitos, Peru countyman... in stopping the taxi to try to swim with the dolphins. Even though we had already done it, we weren’t opposed to trying a swim again and jumped in ourselves. The current however, was much stronger where we stopped than it was 3 days ago and we never were able to get that close to the dolphins this time.
That night we all treated ourselves to Texas BBQ (not so good here) and some ice cream cake. Perfect timing to celebrate a birthday and relax.
Iquitos, Peru bjergaard... of us, it was raised about 2 feet above everywhere else on a gradual incline so you didn’t even notice you were standing on it. It was about 25 feet in diameter. Wow. I was glad I was not a leaf right then.

We past two lines of bamboo sticks in a small river. “Fish trap,” Falcon explained. One row of bamboo sticks ran perpendicular to the stream all the way from one end to the other. He pointed to the other row of bamboo sticks. “Those ...
Iquitos, Peru bjergaard... in fact, that many trees hold themselves up in it. Everywhere you try to walk, or even take a canoe, you will come across a felled tree in your path. The taller trees standing above you have made it to this point by developing a huge root structure. As the ground erodes away underneath of them, the base of the tree becomes the roots. Some taller trees appear absolutely gigantic at the base because the roots are fanning out above the ground. We would find ...
Iquitos, Peru bjergaard... town to buy our hammocks. After a bit of bartering, we walked away with our three hammocks for about 25 nuevos soles each. We headed back to the boat, which had filled up surprisingly since we left, and someone showed us how to hang our hammock beds up.

The dock was a sight in itself. People were carrying 50kg salt bags on their backs and piling them on the boat. And then they unloaded a truck full of large bags of rice-I can only imagine what that ...
Iquitos, Peru bjergaard... day we continued on, finding out we were too late for any buses headed to Yurimaguas and so instead found ourselves the share taxi stan in town in an effort to keep going. It was here that we met our new friend Bill from England who was to both share our taxi, and be our boat trip buddy for the following few days. And three hours later (with again Nikki and i sharing the front seat) we arrived at our destination. And we didnt even need to go looking for ...
On s'y sentait apaises.
Iquitos, Loreto, Peru bourlingueurFor some reason, the Rapidito was delayed and we didn't arrive in Iquitos until 6 and it was beginning to get dark. Although I nodded off a few times during the trip, 14 hours in a cramped seat, as well as the 3 a.m. wake-up, had taken their toll and I was tired. The exchange desk was closed when I got to the Peruvian immigration control - those slackers! It was 4 a .m. already! So my first stop in Iquitos ...

Iquitos, Peru jon-daniella... young man, his wife Carmen and his two young sons Pedro and Miguel. They welcomed us as if we were old friends. It gave me an opportunity to see how these people live. Small, wooden huts, sometimes no more than just a wooden floor on stilts, with a thatched roof overhead. No walls, or maybe just one or two. Who needs walls, anyway? Cooking was done on an open fire inside the house. Chicken, some geese, dogs and cats everywhere. And ...
